Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Sade Freeman.
Hi Kenya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started BBgirllooks by Kenya Sade for a new sense of direction for me. I wanted to do something I love while also making the money I deserve. Of course, businesses don’t take off right away, but I’ve been more and more determined every day to do something greater with my business. I choose every piece of clothing based on originality and stepping out of the “norm” box. I want everyone to be able to say they didn’t see anyone in the outfits formulated by me. That’s specifically why I put outfits together on my site because I may put something together you didn’t think of or you can mix and match outfits to your liking!
It’s a win-win in each situation! I got to where I am today by being proactive and understanding. I like to help my BB’s out as much as possible whether it be giving more discounts than usual or offering free gifts for orders over a certain amount of money. I believe the relationships I’ve built with my BBs give me the drive I need to make them happier to do business with me every time! I love how they love me and bring life into my business because I love them as well! They don’t know how much they mean to me and how they’re the reason I’ve come this far, to begin with! So excited to see what else is to come for BBgirllooks!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has been the bumpiest road I’ve ever been on, but I just keep moving because failure isn’t ever an option for me. I think the easy roads show zero character and it’s also not worth it if it’s just handed to you! You don’t know how many tears I’ve dropped over the stress of this business, but every time I get an order or even a compliment; that stress is pushed to the back burner as it should be.
Some of the biggest struggles are applying for grants and not getting them or honestly having difficult altercations with vendors because wasted time is worse than wasted money. Another struggle is running every social media handle solely by yourself. It gets tiring and redundant, but it’s one of the most effective traffic-building marketing ideas; so just staying on top of it every day sometimes does become overwhelming. Other than the small mishaps the road is continuous and I’m happy to reach any obstacle along it because I know I did this, I made this happen and I didn’t ever give up no matter how many potholes I hit.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own an online clothing & accessories boutique called BBgirllooks by Kenya Sade! I also specialize in styling whether you’re a client or not! I believe I’m known for having a different outlook than most boutiques. I’m always trying to stand out whether it be funky outfits or the strategies I use to build the proper clientele. I believe wholeheartedly that I am an artist in this business. The body is my canvas and the clothes are my paintbrushes. I love to see different looks on people! I love to see people express themselves through clothes because it’s effortless and informative. A person’s whole mood can change just based on their look and I love that for everybody. I think getting dressed and dressing up is a form of healing/therapy and let’s be honest we all could use that. I’m most proud of not conforming.
Since I want to say 8th grade I’ve always been on a mission to look different than others I didn’t want to be caught wearing the same outfit as anyone else and that stuck with me until now, at 30. I’m always proud of how I can pick out the most random items sometimes and throw them together to look like the fit was made that way, to begin with. I like to be the one who stands out in a crowd, not blending.
Where’s the fun in that?! What sets me apart from others is just being me. I’ve never looked at someone and said I wanted to be like them. My mother tells me I think the world revolves around me and honestly that’s a good thing because if I didn’t I feel like I would be used to mediocrity. I put myself in a space where all day long I think about being better than the day before and confidence is a crucial aspect when you want to make it to the top, and that’s exactly where I’m headed.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I actually just visited Denver this month and the best part of your city is definitely the aesthetic of basically everywhere. I love the different activities that are out there and how you can find something new to do every day.
Meow Wolf was the best part of the whole trip! My least favorite about the city is the extremely high taxes and the food didn’t taste good as much as I wanted it to.
