Check Out Kevon Ward’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevon Ward.

Hi Kevon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I can’t pinpoint my exact introduction to art; it’s something I’ve always done. When I was a kid I would draw my favorite characters from movies and I would even make dioramas out of construction paper. In high school, I began painting, as well as taking drama classes where I began learning some basics of makeup. My passion for both art and entertainment didn’t yet collide until I took an internship during college at an effects company known as LaFondFX.

I learned set design, theming, sculpting, molding, casting, etc. I even spent many years working in different haunted houses where I began to hone in on the sfx makeup aspect of the industry. These endeavors led to indie film work, which became the requisite practice that made me eligible for Face Off. I have since taught classes and worked in film, theatre, theme parks, conventions, festivals, and other events.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has had its challenges. I think the reason I keep doing this, though–despite all the learning mistakes (both art and business-wise)–is that I don’t have a choice. Art is what I do. Even throughout the years in which I’ve had a nonartistic job to get me by, I still filled my free time with art in some way. I feel driven to do this and so I do. I’ve had lots of hits and misses, but I really can’t think of a period in my life where I haven’t had a project.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It’s hard to know what sets me apart from others. Ironically, I can pick out another artist’s work in a lineup if they are someone I know. I’ve been told I have a unique style myself, but I’m not sure what it is. I think lots of us lack nearsightedness when it comes to our creations. I do believe versatility is a strength of mine.

I love traditional 2D art, such as acrylic painting and sketching; digital art, such as graphic design and illustration; 3d art, including set building, prop fabrication, maquette sculpting, and puppetry; FX makeup ranging from simple prosthetics to full costumes and also body painting; I’ve even been getting into animation. It’s hard to pick what I’m most proud of. Something that does jump into my head is the lifelike “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters” I created.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m easy to find on social media since my accounts are simply my name. Just look up Kevon Ward, and let me know what you got in mind. I have a web series on Youtube called “Bored as Hell”.
