Check Out Kim Wright’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Wright

Hi Kim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love of art began at a young age. I had an aunt who was a very talented artist, she opened my eyes to the world of fine art. When I was 11-years old she passed away, leaving me with all of her art supplies and art school instructional books. This is when I began drawing and creating portraits of my classmates.
My formal education began in high school, followed by 3 years of studying Fine Arts at Arizona State University. Studying fine art and art history changed everything for me – now being influenced by the old masters.
A few years later, I finished with a degree in graphic design, which proved to be a good career choice. I worked in the Magazine Publishing Industry for my entire 30-year career. I found magazine design to be exciting and challenging, but my soul still craved the experience of creating fine art.
Over the years I studied with many fine artists in Arizona and Colorado, whose work and careers I admired. Beginning with Earl Linderman, who I met while studying at ASU. Linderman’s magnificent paintings were filled with playful energy and story telling, the kind that frees your mind and stimulates your imagination. Years later when I returned to Colorado, I began studying pastel with Tony Ortega at The Art Students League of Denver. Through his teachings I learned to love bright, brilliant color and creating a rhythm with color that takes the viewer on a journey through the painting.
In 2020, during the pandemic, I returned to my love of painting. I am now a full-time artist, painting most every day in my studio, and allowing curiosity to lead the way. After 2 years of exploring painting with acrylics, I began showing my work in local group shows. As a member of several art associations I am presented with many opportunities to show my work, and have won 6 awards for my work. I am now showing in 2 public venues, a co-op member of Lakewood Arts Gallery in 40 West Arts District, and I co-manage Fuse Box Container Gallery in Westminster.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Once I retired from graphic design and became my “own boss” my talent and skills came alive. I am very fortunate that it was a smooth and enjoyable transition.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I began working in acrylics in 2020 and love painting. With the daily practice of painting, I have fine-tuned my skills and am now exploring new ways to express myself. This exploration is lead by my curiosity to create new ways of communicating with paint.
I am known for my bright, saturated color schemes and strong compositions filled with color and texture. I have been working in mixed-media for the past year and love it! I create gel printed collage papers that are used to create backgrounds that are sometimes playful, and sometimes mysterious with hidden messages. These are combined with painting various subjects found in nature.
I won an award this past September for a mixed media piece that was showing at the Lakewood Cultural Center. That award validated that the direction I am taking with my art work is intriguing and enjoyable to the viewer.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Loving what you do. I love being an artist, it is a dream come true to say confidently, “I am a full-time artist.”
My paintings are joyful, expressing positivity and are uplifting for the viewer. This has become important for me to share, it is my way of putting more positive energy into the world, something we all need.
My intention as an artist is to create art that evokes an emotion of joy, and has a calming effect on all who view it. Art that helps us all to exhale the past, and breathe in all the beauty we are surrounded by in nature.
