Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Briles.
Hi Kristi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in the small community of Hoisington, KS. My passion for education and a desire to work with children led me to Kansas State University, where I pursued a degree in elementary education. During my time at K-State, I had the opportunity to work as a respite care provider for five families. This role allowed me to become an integral part of these families’ lives, offering support during both their celebrations and their struggles. It was during this period that I developed a deep appreciation and love for children with disabilities and their families.
After graduating, I entered a new chapter in my life by getting married and starting a family of my own. I spent over 12 years as a stay-at-home mom to my three children, Adam, Emma, and Erik. My dedication to my family was a priority during this time, but as Erik started kindergarten, I felt the need to return to my passion for teaching. I began substituting in schools that my children attended, which reminded me why I chose to be a teacher.
Within just two years, I found myself back in the classroom, this time as a special education teacher at Berthoud High School. Teaching high school students was a fantastic experience – they are incredibly smart, witty, and have a knack for making you laugh. During this period, I began a journey to further my knowledge by pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
Upon completing my master’s degree, I transitioned to a new role as a special education administrator in the Thompson School District. Over five years, I had the privilege of working with exceptional families, students, staff, and administrators. This role provided me with valuable insights into the complexities of special education, the importance of building strong partnerships within the education system and building strong relationships.
However, I eventually felt a strong desire for a change, especially as I became an empty nester with more time and a passion for making a meaningful impact. It was then that I decided to take a leap of faith and applied for the position of Executive Director at Respite Care Inc. The opportunity to lead an organization dedicated to providing support and care for families and children with disabilities was incredibly appealing to me.
When I first learned about the opportunity at Respite Care Inc., I was immediately drawn to it. The organization’s mission aligned perfectly with my passion for serving children with disabilities and their families. However, I must admit that I didn’t possess all the qualifications that were initially listed for the role. Nevertheless, I knew that I had the determination, a strong support system in the form of the dedicated staff at Respite Care Inc., and an unwavering passion for the cause.
The interview process was thorough, consisting of multiple rounds. What made it truly special was that I had the opportunity to meet with various stakeholders, including families, volunteers, community members, kids, board members, and the dedicated staff who formed the foundation of Respite Care Inc. These interactions were instrumental in helping me understand the organization’s values, culture, and the incredible impact it had on the lives of those it served.
After three rounds of interviews, I was thrilled to receive an offer for the Executive Director position. I happily accepted the position, excited to take on the challenge and contribute to Respite Care Inc.’s mission. I firmly believe that a strong team and a shared commitment to a great cause can overcome any obstacles, and I’m excited to be a part of this remarkable organization and work alongside its dedicated staff, board members, volunteers, community members, and the amazing families and children it serves.
I’m truly excited to be part of this organization and to continue my journey of making a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Bumps in the road keep life real and provide perspective and personal growth. Raising three children as a single parent, while working and pursuing my master’s degree was undoubtedly one of the most demanding periods of my life.
Balancing the responsibilities of parenthood, work, and education often felt overwhelming. I won’t deny that there were many days when I shed tears and had moments of self-doubt. I allowed myself the space for what I affectionately called “pity parties.” Sometimes these occurred weekly, and on particularly tough days, even daily.
During this challenging period, I was fortunate to have a strong support system. I met Cody, my husband now during that time and my dad and stepmom lived 2 miles away. They played a role in helping me juggle the logistics of daily life, from driving the kids to and from school to attending their practices and games. Their support made all the difference, and it’s a reminder of the importance of having a reliable and caring network to lean on during difficult times.
However, one of the most profound challenges I’ve had to face was the loss of my dad two years ago. It was incredibly painful not only for me but for my children and Cody as well. My dad fought a courageous battle against cancer, maintaining his sense of humor and sharp wit throughout. Cancer eventually won, but my dad’s dignity and humor were constant.
These challenges and losses have taught me resilience, the importance of self-compassion, and the value of a strong support network. They’ve instilled in me a deep empathy for the struggles that others may face, both personally and professionally.
As a leader, I’m committed to creating an environment where individuals can find support, understanding, and the space to navigate their challenges. I firmly believe that these experiences have made me a more compassionate and empathetic leader, one who understands the complexities of life and is dedicated to helping others overcome their obstacles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most proud of my kids, my strong relationship with others, and being part of the Respite Care family. I like to think I am known for being funny, playing practical jokes, being a realist with advice, an advocate, and fun to be around. What sets me apart from others?… I am approachable and will have a conversation with anyone. No one is a stranger to me.
A little bit about Respite Care….we were founded in 1981 by a group of parents who were raising children with developmental disabilities and wanted to create a safe, nurturing place where their children could play, learn, and grow among friends while also having their special needs met. Our mission is to provide short-term, quality care for children with developmental disabilities, giving respite to their families, and enhancing the quality of life for the entire family.
Today, Respite Care is the only organization of its kind offering affordable, specialized, short-term care to families in Northern Colorado who are raising children with special needs. Our support allows families to function better, enjoy life more fully, reduce stress, and raise children with disabilities at home. Respite Care provides children with many opportunities to enjoy the same kinds of activities that non-disabled children enjoy.
Most families use our services for daily care, so parents may work, go to school, or spend quality time with other family members. When the family is experiencing an emergency or needs a break, they may schedule care for up to 14 consecutive days. From July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, we offered 52,040.66 hours of care for 133 children, with 149 overnight stays.
We offer numerous opportunities for children with disabilities to reach their full potential and enjoy a variety of activities:
Early Childhood Program (ages 0-5)
School-Age Program (ages 6-12)
Teen Program (ages 13-17)
Wilderness Camp: Integrating children with nondisabled peers in activities (archery, hiking, horseback riding, campfires, skits).
Summer Day Camp: Interactive experiences at various destinations along the Front Range.
Life Skills for Teens: Teaching vital skills for independent living and group interactions.
Accessing affordable, quality care for a child with a disability can be a major barrier to families’ ability to work toward or maintain self-sufficiency. Respite Care removes that barrier by providing affordable, high-quality, individualized, evidence-based short-term child care in a home-style environment for children with developmental disabilities.
Respite Care employs 65 staff members, provides opportunities for 850 volunteers, and serves 138 families in Larimer and Weld counties. We have strong community backing and have been serving families for the past 41 years
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see Respite Care Inc. growing in the next 5 years! We have run out of space in our current home and to serve more kids and families in Larimer and Weld counties we will need to expand.
