Today we’d like to introduce you to Lasalle Pinnock.
Hi Lasalle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started doing stand-up comedy about seven years ago when my department closed down for this healthcare company I was working for. It was something I wanted to do for years, told my wife about it and she told me I should definitely pursue it!! I just started going to open mics in Atlanta at the time where I lived and just started doing as many mics as I could. I got to where I’m at today just by working on my craft and constantly writing every single day and getting on as many stages as possible to continue to improve. It’s been a fun journey and constantly learning, growing and booking more shows because of it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has definitely not been a smooth ride lol. It’s a comedy so it will always have its ups and downs. You are not going to kill it every night and there has been some bad shows. Having a family and still working a 9-5 job makes it difficult at times to perform as many times a week as I would like. Pay is not always great as you drive hours away to get stage time and perform for crowds of 10 or less people sometimes. Hard missing events or not being home with your family cause outperforming. You have bookers and some people who don’t want to pay you correctly. Plenty of obstacles and things that make this challenging. You have self-doubt, are you good enough, you see peers further along than you and may question what are you doing wrong. I moved to Denver three years ago and right before covid so I wasn’t able to perform as many shows as I needed and wanted too. Which was really hard because I’m like a new comic starting all over in a new state and being unknown was hard getting booked. These are some do the things you deal with, but it’s a passion and we do this because we love it. Even with the doubts and obstacles, you keep going cause you love and believe the hard work will pay off!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I perform stand-up comedy all over the Colorado area! I’m known for my wild stories and sharing the crazy things that pop in my head. What sets me apart from others is just my honesty on stage and not being afraid to say the things I say. I share personal stories about my life on stage a lot of it is real and of course, it’s comedy but a lot is just jokes or something I definitely embellish! You just don’t know where I’m going with my stories and I like to keep my audiences guessing! One of the things I’m most proud of is just following my dream and doing what I love to do. Moving to a new city where nobody knows me and being able to perform and book gigs and just making people laugh! I’m proud of the fact that I’m doing what I love with a great support system and that my wife is also doing what she loves! It’s great we are both doing the things we want to do!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Best advice I can give anyone starting out is to write every single day and to go to as many open mics as possible! Get on stage as much as possible because it’s the only way you will get better, the only way to find your voice and improve your craft. Bombing and horrible bar shows are all a part of the process and journey lol, enjoy it! Don’t worry about your peers if they seemed to be further along than you or you feel doing better than you, just stay focused and keep grinding and your hard work will pay off. Be yourself and stay true to yourself don’t try and be anyone else.
