Today we’d like to introduce you to Lei Yang

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always loved photography, from taking photos with the family camera on vacation, to photographing cars and landscapes in high school, to photographing graduations in College, to capturing wedding celebrations now.

Photography has always been a huge part of my life. I built my skills by photographing the things that I love, and now I get to bring that passion to my clients by turning moments from their weddings into permanent memories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth road! I don’t know too many business owners or independent contractors that haven’t had some kind of struggle along the way.

I started doing professional photography during college by photographing graduations. As you can imagine, busy Graduation season is around Winter break and end of the spring semester – times that happen to line up with what? MIDTERMS AND FINALS. Trying to balance graduation bookings and private projects with studying for finals was definitely not easy. Then when I went out on my own, there were tons of moments where I thought about giving up. My first year as an independent photographer, I booked only 3 gigs the entire year – 2 of which were for friends and family.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a job outside of photography that pays for my life and needs, so I feel fortunate now to be in a position to take on projects where I can truly bring my passion and not just because I need a paycheck.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in capturing weddings with a cinematic flair. I’ve had a passion for film and filmmaking for as long as I’ve loved photography and run a growing youtube channel alongside my photography work. My eye for moving visual arts have given me unique perspective to capture moments when they happen and immortalize them in my photography work.

Additionally, I don’t edit my photos with an identical style each time – I let the scene speak to me and observe the emotions in the scene to help dictate what they photos will wind up looking like. On the surface, it may seem to some like “inconsistency”. In my humble opinion however, it’s not inconsistency – it’s a dedication to preserving true emotions and creating a larger-than-life image that’s intended to evoke emotion in the viewer.

I’m most proud of the moments I’ve captured naturally – candid, unposed, and representative of a couple’s everlasting love.

How do you think about happiness?
Helping people – As a wedding photographer, my job is to help couples remember their special day. I love helping my couples create and immortalize those memories.

I also love helping people learn about photography and decide whether a particular piece of photography gear is right for them or not. That’s what I aim to do with each video I upload to my youtube channel – Lei Yang Photo
