Check Out Lewis Carlyle’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lewis Carlyle.

Lewis Carlyle

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been interested in the visual arts for as long as I can remember. The drawing was big when I was a kid. All of my friends were into drawing: pencils, charcoal, pastels. We would use magazine photos as references to create portraits of our favorite celebrities.

After college, I got into photography, and from there, everything changed. I got started in the portrait world, and it’s a great place to be because you meet all kinds of interesting people.

From there, I moved into landscape photography and immediately fell in love. It’s the ultimate adventure, the perfect combination of travel, culture, and wilderness. If you love the outdoors, the camera will take you places you’ve never dreamed of.

Today, I shoot landscape artwork for galleries, luxury homes, and hotels.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any path in life, the photography world is full of challenges. We have seen the slow decline of the professional photographer over the last two decades.

When digital cameras hit the scene, everyone jumped onto the photo bandwagon and started chasing the dream. Today, everyone has an iPhone in their pocket which takes amazing images. In short, there are more photographers than there are customers. Anyone looking to get into the photography scene today can pretty much forget about making money. Those days are long gone.

You don’t have to know the first thing about exposure, sharpness, focal length, or any of the technical disciplines that were essential in the days of film. The computer does all the thinking for you. Within the blink of an eye, a picture is shot, uploaded to the internet, and shared. There is no more craft; just click, and move on.

Additionally, Artificial Intelligence is the new 800-pound tech gorilla on the scene. You don’t even need a camera anymore to make an image!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
These days, I am a big advocate of photography education. Lately, I have started a new initiative involving wheelchair-accessible landscape photography destinations.

There are a lot of misconceptions about landscape photography. For instance, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy this particular genre.

There are a lot of stellar destinations that are both strikingly beautiful and fully accessible to people with disabilities. Educating the public about these places is where I’m at right now.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’m still a child, so every day is pretty good.
