Check Out Lucia Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Johnson.

Hi Lucia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started pursuing photography as a career about two years ago. I had a friend who worked for the CU Buffs Media Team. He connected me with the Director of Digital Content, and I scored an internship shooting for the sports teams. Here, I have been able to learn more than I ever would have on my own and made some really important connections with other creatives. My passion lies more in documenting travel and music. I started shooting concerts around the same time that I did sports. For a year and a half, I was photographing shows pro bono. At times, it felt like I was never going to be able to get a paid gig. In the end, I’m super grateful for all those free shows I did. I got to listen to a lot of beautiful music and meet awesome people. I built my portfolio from these shows, and now I get asked to do shows all the time, and a lot of the bands that reach out are ones that I shot previously for free.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In pursuing a creative trade like photography, you have to spend a lot of time practicing and teaching yourself new things. It’s been a hustle. I can’t count the amount of free shows or events that I have covered just to get more content for my portfolio and expand my network. It hasn’t been easy. There have been many late nights shooting and editing, but it’s been a lot of fun.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work really just aims to capture how I see the world. I’m known around Boulder mostly for concert photography but I like to think people see that I have my own style that sticks out from others. When I shoot a concert, my rule of thumb is to capture angles or framing that I haven’t seen before. I’m a musician myself, so I think that helps a lot in figuring out how to capture different bands based on their style. I love music. It doesn’t feel like a job at all when I get hired to shoot a concert. Connecting with musicians and getting to capture a show that they’ll look back on is the most fulfilling thing for me.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
The most important thing about getting into photography is to practice it. Take pictures of your friends, your lunch, your backyard, etc. The more you can practice taking photos, the more you’ll fall into your own style.
