Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Terzian.
Hi Mackenzie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I’m Mackenzie, owner & designer behind Rose Bud Thorn florals.
Rose Bud Thorn (also commonly referred to as ‘RBT’) is a wedding floral design company in Boulder, Colorado. We lean deeply into textural, overgrown & and intentionally undone approaches to floral design, meaning that we design in a bit of raw nature. The amount of inspiration I draw from how flowers naturally grow and die is huge, and we always try to bring that into the wedding designs we bring to life for our clients.
I’ve worked in the floral wedding world since 2015 and started RBT in 2022. I recently was fortunate enough to sign the lease on our first studio space in Boulder, and I am beyond thrilled for myself and my team to be able to work out of it this wedding season. The studio is a little industrial space off Pearl Street, with tons of natural light and tall ceilings.
I’ve been working hard to curate our space and make our studio available for others in the wedding industry to utilize, whether that be other florists, photographers, planners, or anyone who needs the space to help grow their portfolios and hone in on their skills.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know if anyone travels a super smooth road, but it definitely has felt like a natural one for me.
From the moment I knew it was time to start RBT, things became very clear to me in how I needed to do it and how I wanted to show up for myself, the community, and our couples. I remember seeing something a few years ago that said, ‘Manifest it, but also do the f***ing work,’ and I think about that often.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a full-service specialty wedding floral design company, which is a huge mouthful, right? Essentially, Rose Bud Thorn specializes in bringing forward unique floral designs, pulling inspiration from the local flowers and seasons we get to work with, and creating wedding florals that help tell a story for the couples we get to design for.
I think when a lot of florists start out, they take on a lot of different styles in order to gain traction (and make money), and I totally get & respect that! But I had a really loud voice in my head from the get-go telling me, “Say no, this isn’t for you,” and I really leaned into that. I said “No” a lot, which was totally terrifying.
I was working another job to help me get by, but I really knew immediately from the start of RBT that if I wasn’t obsessed with the design and project, it wasn’t going to serve me OR the client in the way we both needed. I truly think that the amount that I turned away within our first year helped us get to where we are now, with an almost fully booked 2024 season working with clients and vendors I am fully in love with.
Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
I am a generally happy person, but I get a ton of joy from teaching and supporting my team.
Right now I work with a solid group of freelance designers who work not only with RBT, but also a handful of other businesses throughout the year (some even have their own floral businesses!). I know that RBT may just be a stepping stone in their journey, but being able to create a space of support and growth to help them in their own journey absolutely lights me up.
I am also so incredibly happy every time I step into the local flower market and farms we buy from. This past year, we really prioritized local & seasonal flowers over imported ones, and knowing where the flowers came from and who grew them made each design so much more intentional for me.
