Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Young.
Hi Maggie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been immersed into the hair world for the past 17 years. It feels as if it’s moved so fast. I’ve worn so many different hats to get to being the artist I am today. I found a love for hair and makeup as a child. I think I always knew I would end up in this profession. I started my journey on 7th street in the SOMA district of San Francisco attending beauty school. I continued working around the Bay Area for the next 6 years as a wig maker and makeup artist for live theater and opera all while working in beauty education or behind the chair. To be able to live in SF, you had to have 3 jobs minimum. These are the years that shaped my work ethic and creativity. I moved back to Denver in 2011 to be closer to family (Colorado Native!) and see what the Queen City had to offer me. I continued my passion for live theater designing and helping style wigs for shows at DU, local community theaters, and Colorado Ballet. Becoming the wig mistress for Colorado Ballet helped me check off my ultimate goal, and getting to work one of my all-time favorite ballets, The Nutcracker. I’d hit the top of what I now look at as career one, proud, and fulfilled. It was time to step back and focus on my the next chapter of my career, I chose to be behind the chair full time and fill my weekends helping people feel their very best on their wedding days. Then in fall of 2020 adding the ultimate career change as, Mom! Navigating between running my own business and being a part-time stay-at-home mom has had is challenges, but also some of the most gratifying times of my life. My family is the best thing that has ever happened to me!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is ever smooth! Man, would life be easy if they were! It’s the twist and turns that make you into who you are. I think being a creative artist in the hair and makeup world can be a struggle. You focus your art into making people feel good and you put your heart on the line every day.
A huge struggle has been the pandemic. Everyone has had a hard road on this one. For me, as an independent small business owner we felt it so much. From being shut down to not knowing how to navigate the PPP loans or unemployment, not gettin’ clear messages on guidance on how to reopen or operate our business. It has been exhausting. On top of it, my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child(!!!) in January 2020. Then, I have been figuring out how to be a first-time mother, running my business safely for my family and clients, and rebuilding what has been lost from the past 2-3 years. I am thankful and grateful for the love and support of my husband and son, family and friends, the owners and my coworkers of Trademarc Salon, and all my clients who have stuck with me on this rollercoaster!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in making people feel good. If it’s giving you fabulous hair, a great makeup look or taking my knowledge of wigs and styling from the theater bringing it to everyday life. I do short or long cuts, multidimensional hair color, updos, extensions, wigs, and makeup. Anyone and everyone is welcome in my chair!
I currently work at Trademarc Salon in the 5 Points neighborhood in Denver. When clients come in to see me, I give the whole “hairapist” experience. When you are in my chair, you can find me always babbling about the latest astrological movement and why it’s making your ex calling you again, or why your boss is totally missing the mark in communicating with you. I hope your soul feels as good as your hair when you leave.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
You’re not going to make everyone happy and that’s okay. (Man, I wish I could!) It’s a huge accomplishment to be proud of the work you put out. Don’t do it for likes, do it for you! Loss typically leads to gain and failure can be our best lesson. Feel the feels one day, but don’t allow yourself to waller in them the next. Crying is the bodies but way to healing and releasing! Always be proud of you!!!
