Today we’d like to introduce you to Mai Yang.
Hi Mai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from North Carolina, and I am a Nail Technician. Growing up I was never really an artistic person and had never been to a nail salon before. I had no knowledge of nails, I thought doing nails only consist of having fake nails, so to say this is my career and that I love it, is really funny and amazes me every time. When I was 18, I started attending a community college in town for teaching; I’ve always thought teaching was my dream job, until shortly after I started school. I realized I needed a job but wanted to do something that would be fun and just so during that time the community college happens to offer an expedited, 4 months nail course. I took my chances and went with it and immediately I feel in love with it, I did nails for about a year and then I moved to Colorado. When I moved here it seems like I’ve started all over again, I had no idea of what to do and where to begin, so I just never transferred my nail license. In 2015, I decided to get into nails again since I never looked back. I’ve been doing nails for about 8 years now, considering the 1 year I had in North Carolina, and finally in 2021 with the encouragement of my family, friends, and clients, I was able to muster up the courage to go off on my own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I said it was, I would be lying. Just like everyone, I’ve encountered many setbacks. I’ve had to learn the nail world and also the business aspect of it as well. When I first started doing nails, obviously I wasn’t the best and there was no help or guidance. Going to school only helped me learned the basics that got me a nail license and from there I could only depend on myself. I had to start from the bottom and work my way up; anywhere from learning all the different products and what they do to what I can do and what is trending, to over practicing. Then from there, I was working in salons that overworked and underappreciated me to recognizing my own talents and worth and figuring out how I could branch off on my own. As you see, the roads are nothing but smooth and there were multiple times throughout my career, where I questioned myself and if I should continue to pursue it, but I finally came to realize that it’s a never-ending process and there will always be struggles and obstacles, but you just have to keep going and fighting your way through.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do manicures, pedicures, nail arts, and artificial nails. My specialty would be acrylic nails; although I do everything, acrylic nails are my all-time most requested. What I am best known for is probably nail art, as majority of my clientele does some sort of nail art or designs. What I am most proud of is my artistic skills. Growing up I never believed I could draw or do anything artistic; seeing the things I’m able to do now and realizing I’ve overcame that makes me so proud of myself. I never thought I could be an artistic person but here I am doing nails; it just brings the best of me, and I enjoy it so much, so I believe what sets me apart from others is just my passion for doing nails. Some people are comfortable where they are but because I have such high passion for it, I’m always striving to be better, so there’s no ending to my growing.
