Today we’d like to introduce you to Maizie Chan.
Maizie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Being a new mom in a new place during the pandemic was incredibly lonely. I knew I wanted my own identity and purpose that was also something I enjoyed doing. Like many others during this time, I found that in social media, Mainly in social media with content creation and finding creative ways to keep me and the kids busy.
Missing my family in my hometown I realized just how big a role my culture played in my life, I wanted to show that in my content by sharing locally AAPI-owned businesses, experiences, and other relatable content. You could say my niche is the adventure mom lifestyle with an Asian American twist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I started on TikTok and had a rude awakening when one of my first videos to go “viral” was something taken out of context. Something that was meant to be playful turned into me receiving pretty mean comments.
At the time – I didn’t handle it well. I argued with people in the comments instead of just blocking or deleting it (which is how I would handle it now). A more relatable challenge would be remaining consistent even though you’re not getting paid brand deals or gifted opportunities. It’s like you’re working for free for the first couple of months to a year!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator and local micro-influencer who specializes in family-friendly experiences. Everything else could fall into my second niche, lifestyle. What sets me apart is my culture. When I do a grocery haul, it’ll be all Asian food. When I did a kitchen reset, instead of stocking up on the same snacks and drinks, I showed myself refilling my cooking station which had items like soy sauce and sesame oil. I guess you could say I am an AAPI lifestyle creator.
The one thing I’m proud of isn’t a specific accomplishment like reaching a certain number of followers. I’m proud of the confidence this has given me. I’m self-taught in video creation and social media marketing. There are times I get an offer and I’m like “Wow, this brand wants to pay ME?”
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Stay consistent. If you’re consistent (especially in social media) you’ll always get to a better spot than you were had you not been consistent. Don’t worry about what others are doing, I used to get FOMO when similar creators were all going to the same event or doing the same brand collaboration but I wasn’t approved for it (even though I applied or reached out.) That’s when I think of this quote I heard somewhere “What’s made for you will not miss you”.
