Check Out Matt Hensley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Hensley

Hi Matt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Matt Hensley, and I’ve been a runner the majority of my life. Both my parents were runners, and so I began my running journey in middle school. I went on to compete at University of Florida, and completed my first marathon in 2010 at the Chicago Marathon. After college, I had a friend ask me to train him for his first marathon. It went very well, and from there other friends and family started asking me to coach them. It finally grew to a level to where I decided to formulate a company, and called it Boulder Underground. I met my wife Tansey in 2020. She had a background in running as well, competing at University of Portland, as well as a background in coaching high school, community college, and adults. From there, the business has grown– we have athletes from over the country, and have coached beginners to Olympic Trials Qualifiers, as well as celebrities like Lance Armstrong.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a young business, there was some uncertainty with the COVID19 pandemic. We were fortunate that many people during and since 2020 have invested in their health and prioritized staying active. We’ve been lucky enough to experience steady growth every year.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Boulder Underground is a running coaching service that provides training for athletes of all abilities and is committed to inspiring people everywhere to get up and get out to experience a happy, healthy and active lifestyle. Whether an athlete is hoping to walk or run their first 5k or marathon, or trying to qualify for the Olympic Trials, there is a coach and a training plan for them with Boulder Underground.

I’m really excited for the next few years because Tansey is taking over a lot of the operational components to help continue growing the business. We hope to continue to grow our individual athlete roster while also getting involved with corporate wellness. “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today” Regardless of where someone is at in their journey, we believe everybody is an athlete, and love helping people reach their potential.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is playing basketball with my brothers and friends in the backyard.
