Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Hermann.
Hi Meg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up a Navy brat, which meant moving constantly. I was born in Japan, then lived in Seattle, Escondido and San Diego before landing in Colorado. I’m one of five kids, so playtime was an absolute constant growing up – that love for play is still a deep core value and something that drives a lot of my approach to life to this day.
My family is hugely musical, everyone played at least one instrument if not more. I was in piano lessons and voice/choir for 8 years, and taught myself guitar in college, so the love of music stretches back as far as I can remember. I also was always dancing as a kid – ballet, jazz, and tap before dance fell off in high school and college. I started going to electronic music shows in 2017 and was hooked immediately. I had never experienced that combination of play and music at the same time, and it majorly resurrected how much I love dancing and moving my body. I was in a process at the time of slowly untangling the decades of shame and fear I had with my body from growing up in evangelical purity culture, and dance floors were so healing for me in that journey. dancing was the way i found out how to trust my body, feel safe in my body, feel proud and celebratory of the way my body felt and looked and moved.
At the same time, it was a little more difficult to find house & techno shows back then (maybe the scene was smaller, maybe I just didn’t know where to look), and also hit or miss on if an event would have a great crowd, folks who were all there to dance and connect. About a year in i knew I wanted to be a DJ someday, to be able to create this magic myself and create epic spaces with amazing people. Fast forward to 2021, and the turning point where the dream became reality was my partner hilariously calling me out one day – he said hey Meg, I’ve heard you say you want to be a DJ, but I don’t see you doing anything about it. What the fuq is that? I bought my first decks that day, gave myself a 6 month time limit to learn before trying to book gigs, and then played my first show 6 months later in Jan 2022. It’s been a wild amazing journey ever since!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest early challenges was the learning curve. It’s not just learning how to DJ — it’s learning an entire industry, building your own brand, and wearing every single hat along the way. You’re your own marketer, content creator, booker, promoter, and collections department, while trying to stay rooted in the actual music. Finding ways to manage my time and avoid burnout is still something I’m actively working on. Mental health is another ongoing one. Late nights, tons of screen time, and inconsistent sleep isn’t always the easiest cadence to thrive in (good thing I love this as much as I do!)
The biggest obstacle so far, though, was when life slapped some major health challenges on my plate in 2023. I started to get sick with seemingly random, weird symptoms that summer, which 6 months later had snowballed to bald patches on my head, extreme fatigue, crippling brain fog, fainting, and I had lost about half my vision, among other things. Months of testing and labs finally uncovered that it was accumulated mold illness, which led to 3 months of being unable to work and about a year before I was fully recovered. That period was so tough – I was barely able to play sets, my vision could only handle about an hour of working on music daily, and since we weren’t able to figure out what was happening for several months I remember wondering if this might be it, an early end to the DJ dream. On the other side of that now, I’m even more acutely aware of the gift it is to be able to see and move and have my health, and i take safeguarding my wellbeing more seriously than I ever have.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a house and techno DJ and producer. 2025 is my fourth year DJing, and after picking up production last year I’m currently working on my own original songs too. Production has been a totally different (read: harder) learning curve than learning to DJ, but it’s been so satisfying. I’m getting closer and closer to having my own original tracks out in the world – stay tuned!
I approach music from a really embodied lens. Each track has to pass the dance test before it makes it into my library, and I’m constantly standing up and moving around while I prep sets to check in on how the music hits in the body and what kind of physical or emotional experience it invites. If it doesn’t move me, it doesn’t make the cut.
I also curate my own nights a couple times a year, which is always a blast – getting to build the vibe from the ground up and create a space that feels intentional and alive is so rewarding. Right now I’m in the process of building out my fall/winter tour calendar, and it’s shaping up to be a season of really special dance floors!
Any big plans?
I’m super excited for the shows & travel I’ve got lined up the rest of this year – Atlanta, New York, Miami, Amsterdam and of course Denver to round out 2025, and then Europe in February for ski season. I’ll be in Amsterdam for my first time at Amsterdam Dance Event which I’m super excited for, both for the insane music and the opportunity to learn from so many industry professionals.
More than anything, the overarching future plan is to bring my music to as many spots as I can. More long, extended 4+ hour sets. More dance floors without phones. More dancing under the stars. More sweaty underground clubs and big fun festivals and those perfect intimate 200-cap nights. Hope to see you on the dancefloor soon!
