Check Out Mia Voss’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Voss.

Hi Mia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I describe myself as an “Accidental Entrepreneur” who wears many hats in order to ebb and flow with the chaos of life (not always easy!).

I moved from NYC to Colorado in 1995, leaving behind the insurance industry that I’d been in for 10 years. At that time, I decided to completely scrap everything corporate and bought a house cleaning business. During that time, I learned so much about unplugging from the BS of corporate life and also a ton about design! Believe me, when you are cleaning a house, you get to know how good design AND bad design can affect your everyday life.

After two years, I wanted to get back into the corporate world so I sold the business in 1997, moved to Denver, and started working for OZ Architecture as an executive assistant. And what a great move! It was the perfect place to direct my newfound curiosity about house & building design and in 2001, I took my knowledge and turned it into a punch list management/inspection business, helping OZ manage the Construction Administration of many of their projects. 21 years later, this business is still going strong!

Back to the curiosity factor, the economic downturn of 2008 hit me hard, like everyone else. No one was building and they were certainly not outsourcing work, no matter how helpful my service was.

I turned to back to the entrepreneurial world and since then have created several new ventures which includes public speaking, livestreaming, brand ambassador work as a mouthy & opinionated micro-influencer (with a focus on travel, cars & everyday products), and a podcaster.

On any given day, I switch my hard hat out for headphones and construction site gear to afternoon/evening wear to check out great businesses around town.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Whoever answers this question with “yes, it was a relatively smooth road”, well I want to meet them and also have what they are having! All kidding aside, challenges are what shape each of us, and HOW we react to challenges is the key.

One of my favorites of The Four Agreements that fits for this particular topic is: Always do your best. Digging into that, you realize that your best changes from day to day.

As I mentioned, I’ve embraced wearing hats & creating multiple revenue streams after experiencing the Market Crash & downturn in the late 2000s. This is not always easy as it can appear flighty. And some people just don’t get it (and have no problem expressing their opinion!). One of my greatest lessons has been to not equate people’s lack of approval with my worth.

One of the best things to help with that is to build your own Boards. Influencers, Besties & Counselors – groups of people who help you with your business, your spiritual journey, and your everyday life (including “what not to do” scenarios)

I encourage everyone to embrace their curiosity and the ability to change their mind, quit one thing, and try something new!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m well-known for being detail-oriented, mouthy and opinionated and here are the multiple ways I do that in my work:

TMC Services is my punch list management & inspection services company. I provide detailed reports for new construction projects such as homes, condominiums, hotels, resorts, multifamily, mixed-use, and commercial projects. I’m not the typical inspector – I inspect for functionality, quality levels & aesthetics – things that often get missed at the completion of a project. My favorite thing is to find things that others miss (paint blemishes, flaws, things that don’t work) and make sure the construction team gets it done BEFORE you move in!

Shit We Don’t Talk About Podcast – my passion project podcast that focuses on topics we should be talking about more often and openly. Guests and topics are incredibly diverse, sometimes painful, sometimes joyful but all things we need to talk about candidly to keep us all informed and connected.
