Check Out Michael Fleishman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Fleishman.

Michael Fleishman

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My partner John Coy and I started Human Powered Endeavors in 2019. Human Powered Endeavors is the promoter of the Lake City Alpine 50 bike race. The race starts and finishes in beautiful Lake City, Colorado in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. We started this race as a way to give back to this vibrant, small mountain town. This high-alpine race is fifty miles long with over 6,000 of climbing over two epic San Juan Mountain passes – Cinnamon Pass (12,640 feet) and Engineer Pass (12,800 feet). It is not a mountain bike race and it is not a gravel race. It is a high-alpine bike race. The 6th Annual Lake City Alpine 50 will take place on August 24, 2024.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Putting on a high-alpine bike race by its nature cannot be a smooth road. One of the chief obstacles in promoting this race is our high-country location. We are, without a doubt, a destination race. Lake City is not the most accessible town, so our racers must be committed to coming a decent distance to race. Our other chief obstacle is that Lake City is a small town with only around 500 year-round residents. Lake City’s limited capacity ensures we will remain a unique small-town race.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Michael Fleishman is a practicing full-time attorney. John Coy is retired. He had a long career in the liquor distribution business. Human Powered Endeavors is a fun side project for us both and provides us with the chance to give back to the town of Lake City, which has brought us both great joy over the years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck always plays some part in business. The first year we put on the race, there were twenty-five avalanches along the race course, various rock slides, and the potential for catastrophic flooding. Somehow, we were able to put on the race. The next two years were met with the Covid epidemic. We were still able to put on the race. So, there is bad luck, there is good luck. You plan, and you pivot, but you keep going.
