Check Out Mikayla Vasquez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Vasquez.

Hi Mikayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After growing up in a house full of girls, I chose to start beauty college and at just 16 years old I was making a way for my future! Two years later, I had my hairstyling and cosmetology license and carried over 10 certifications. After that, I started working at my first salon. I started as an apprentice and worked my way up to assistant to stylist to master stylist, educator and manager in just over a year. I went back to beauty school for a third time and earned my barber license! After nearly three years at my first salon, I felt God telling me it was time for a new path. I had grown as much as I could at that salon and chose to leave without knowing what was next. Fast forward less than eight months, I opened my own studio space and am happier than ever. I have a clientele that I love, a team that supports me and am finally able to take care of myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When someone asks me about the struggles about getting to where I am two things come to mind. First, while I was in beauty school, I was also attending a university. I stayed for three semesters – I started as a chemistry major and switched to business. Finally, I realized I couldn’t learn what I needed to at college and decided to jump headfirst into the working world. Quitting what I thought was supposed to be the next step in life was incredibly difficult. Not only to tell my parents but waiting to see if the only way to succeed in life was truly by attending a traditional college.

After that, the hardest thing was at the end of my time at my first salon. I had reached my full potential there and God led me to make the difficult decision to leave. I had no clue what was next. I had no job lined up. I was starting back at ground zero due to a non-compete agreement and had to pray that I could rebuild my clientele. When I thought I had a friend, a mentor, and someone I would know in the industry, my boss, unfortunately, dropped all communication with me. In realizing that truly the only person who could take care of me was me, I worked to build my business. I let no one stand in my way of allowing me to blossom. I worked to build my business and slowly started gaining more and more guests. The leap of faith was worth it and maybe, if I had to do it again, I would have started Mikas Artistry Shop a little sooner.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am triple licensed in the beauty world and have over 10 certifications in hair, skin and nails. I offer skin services, cuts and colors, however, my number one service and what I am most known for is hair extensions. I am certified and experienced in four methods and counting and also educate for a sew-in foundation. I truly care about the health of your natural hair. Though extensions are a luxury service, I work with you to help with a payment plan or find the best option to give you the hair of your dreams. I truly care about what you want and what your end goals are. Unlike some stylists or extension salons, I am certified and experienced in every method that I offer. I love educating other stylists and my guests on the ins and outs of hair and extensions!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Ambition is the most important characteristic that I have that got me to where I am. There was a moment in my life where I was attending a traditional college, a trade school, and working three jobs so that I could afford to have an education with no debt. Without my drive and determination to pursue my future, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today. I am beyond grateful that God gifted me with such amazing parents who raised me to create a dream and strive to make it come true.
