Check Out Mike Powell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Powell.

Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started dryer vent cleaning in 2016 in Kansas City Missouri as a side business to my full-time job as a Kansas City Missouri fireman.

I left the Kansas City Missouri fire department in September 2020 and continued to do dryer vent cleaning in Kansas City Missouri until 2021 after meeting my wife who is from Loveland, Colorado.

I started to step away from dryer vent cleaning looking at other options after about a year of leaving the fire department.

I got married to my wife and moved to Colorado with my daughter in March 2023 where I then started peer recovery coaching, helping guys out of prison and jail to get their lives back together who have fallen to addiction and are trying to become free.

That job ended after a year due to the company needing coaches to be on call 24 hours a couple days a week.
With a blended family of five children, that was not gonna work for me, so I went back to what I knew doing dryer vent cleaning once again.

I reopened the business in mid June 2025 about 6 months ago.

But this time with a twist.
I now help others in the country build their own dryer vent cleaning businesses, in my dryer vent builders community.
I am also expanding my dryer vent cleaning business into doing, all air duct cleaning, services.
Coming very soon! Within a week or so.

My heart is for people! I was a firefighter in the inner city for over 10 years and I have a deep care for families as well as young men who may need guidance.

What sets me apart from my competitors?
I care.

1. I address my clients with a compliment and a smile and when I meet them.

2. I take a few pictures and explain the job to them.

3. I don’t do a job unless it needs it. Telling the customer I’m sorry this doesn’t need to be cleaned if it doesn’t need it.
4. I never leave a mess.

5. offer a home fire safety checklist
I ask if they have an escape plan and do they have kids?

6. I ask if they have a fire extinguisher under their kitchen sink, explaining cooking is the number one cause of house fires.

These are a few things I do. My heart is for people, not just business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from smooth. I grew up in a loving but tough home, and around tough people my whole life.

And with that I absorbed a lot of lie based beliefs about the world and myself.

Truly the Lord led me out of the the FD and…
Part of leaving was also knowing I needed to get around a different table of people, that thought and operated differently than what I was accustomed to.

If you want something different, you have to do something different.

What steals from most people in their life, is they are living in the past or living in a future in their mind that can’t be predicted. You can’t change the past and you can’t predict the future.

Sure, I could tell you about growing up in an alcoholic family, What it’s like to be in a boxing gym in the inner city from 12 to 16. Surrounded by gangs and drugs, to coming close to drowning on a river to almost being struck by lightning to being shot at, to getting burnt up in a house fire and not thinking I was going to get out. And I could go on. But you see that’s all behind me..

Today my battles in business and life is time.
You don’t get it back it’s very precious.

With a wife and five children taking care of my family well is the biggest obstacle and requires a lot of time.

I plan for tomorrow, but I live for today.

Life is but a breath. We truly don’t know how much time we have.
Be present where you are is key..

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I think I’ve covered this in the beginning.
But I specialize in dryer vent cleaning and now specializing in cleaning all the air ducts in homes.

I am known for my customer service and how I make people feel. This is more than a business to me. It is investing in people if I can make someone smile and bring some light into their life. That’s what it’s all about on top of doing a job well done and being transparent with my customers..

I take pride in going the extra mile for my customers, doing a better job than others and leaving them with a smile on their face.
People will always remember how you make them feel.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Step out of the pressure cooker that we have all created in this world of distraction and busyness.

Stop and look around you and ask yourself what is really important?

I never heard anyone on their deathbed say they wished they would’ve worked more or had more material items.

They all want more time with loved ones.
