Check Out Nancy Servigna’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Servigna.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Valencia, Venezuela. Oldest of 2 (my brother is 11 years younger than I am). I grew up dancing. From creating choreographies and talent shows at home for the family and friends to enjoy to dancing on stage Ballet and Flamenco. I actually danced Flamenco professionally for 4 years. Dance and moving has always been an instrumental part of my life. To me, music has the magical ability to improve your mood and make any activity more enjoyable. In 2007, I moved to Atlanta, GA to pursue my graduate degree in business and it was there where I discovered yoga. In 2009, a really good friend invited me to take a hot vinyasa flow class with her and I was immediately hooked. I loved the connection between breath and movement (to me, it felt like another expression of dance) a powerful tool to calm the mind and work on the inside.

I felt in love with the challenge of the hot/humid room and my ability to master the environment to stay focused and balanced (physically and mentally). I felt in love with the daily progression that the practice offered me and my ability to measure that progress every day in and off the mat. Yoga offers you a new opportunity every day and at the time, I wanted to eagerly go back to my mat see how much further I could go on a brand new day.

In 2012, we moved to Denver (my husband and 9-month-old baby) and here yoga offered me a new community. We didn’t know anyone and my daily practice offered a safe space to express and build new relationships.

Here in Denver, I felt in love with the community aspect of the yoga practice. With the beautiful gift of belonging and evolving together in a shared space and in 2018 I enrolled in my first teacher training.

I have been teaching yoga since then and it has brought a new sense of joy and fulfillment as I guide students through their practice. I feel my best after I teach a yoga class and see their faces when they accomplish a new pose or improve their endurance and can hold a pose longer.

Since yoga became a life passion, my husband and I decided to open our first yoga studio here in Denver.

We have been working very hard to bring the life-changing benefits of yoga to the Lowry community and are scheduled to open in May 2022.

This is a dream for us, a family-owned business where we want everyone to feel welcome, included, heard, seen and acknowledged as part of this community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not. I moved to America and had to start all over again. Learn and improve the language daily. Understand the cultural differences and find a way to work on my own identity in this new society. We have no family in town and we both work in corporate America full time so we have to be very intentional balancing our time from work, the business, and the family. Now, we have 2 children (9 and 7 years old) and we have to be fully present for them when we have family time.

However, to me challenges and obstacles are opportunities to prove yourself, to push further, and to work harder to find new solutions.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a chemical engineer and started my career working in the petrochemical industry back in Venezuela. After I completed my MBA, I started working for global CPG companies in Supply Chain. I love this space because it is all about to solving challenges, balancing supply and demand, optimizing production, and improving operational efficiencies. I am very proud of starting my career all over again in the US and having the perseverance to grow quickly into managerial roles that had allowed me to work on global projects.

I speak Spanish, English, and basic Italian and Portuguese and this knowledge has given me a competitive advantage when looking and pursuing global roles at multinational corporations.

It is not only the language but the understanding of the culture, the ability to connect with people and build good working relationships what sets me apart.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe luck has played a role in achieving success in my career or business. I believe in actions and hard work and the rewards and achievements that come as a consequence. I believe that if you go out every day with the clear intention of doing your best, you will achieve excellence. Even in those situations where things don’t work out, you still can have the sense of fulfillment that comes from doing your best.

I love to learn; I am always finding ways to get new knowledge and continue to improve where I am at a given point and that has led me to more opportunities in my career and in our business.

I obtained my undergraduate degree and 5 years later moved to the US to pursue my MBA. On the yoga side, I worked on my first yoga teacher training in 2018, then completed my 200h certification in November 2019 and my 300h certification in January 2022. In a short period of time, I have worked very hard to continue to learn more about yoga and take my education to the highest level of instruction available.
