Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate & Thomas Cowley
Nate & Thomas, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Music has always been a part of our lives, practically since birth. Nate got his first drum when he was 2 years old, and Thomas followed around 4 years old or so.
We played percussion in nearly every single extracurricular music activity or class from the start of Middle School all through High School and beyond. Jazz Band, Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, Pipe Band, Pit Orchestra, AP Music Theory and even playing in groups to help out the schools’ choirs and other events and bands (Pop Punk and Metal Bands).
When it comes to EDM, we got the opportunity to play at Red Rocks for Big Gigantic in 2015 for their Rowdytown III weekend with the Eaglecrest High School Marching Band. B2B sold out nights was nothing short of spectacular and gave us a “front row seat” in seeing what a sold-out Red Rocks looks like from the stage. From that moment on, it’s been our goal to one day incorporate all the music knowledge we had learned of over 20+ years into our own music and perform it to people that enjoy and relate to it together as a unit.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We believe that any goal we set for ourselves to achieve will come with its fair share of obstacles and challenges. In a way, it makes us feel like it was worked for and not just a given thing.
We’ve broke drumsticks, been late to a rehearsal or two, had our USBs corrupted, had labels pass on tracks, the list goes on and on. There is always something different in the way, but we always find the solution to try and prevent it from happening again in the future.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are Nate and Thomas Cowley, The Broken Skyline. We are a Melodic Bass duo out of Denver, CO that use FL Studio and Ableton to create our music.
We implement a lot of our orchestral and music theory knowledge into our music to create a multitude of emotions throughout each and every song we write.
We specialize in percussion writing, performances with live instrumentation/production and a dedicated team to ensure meticulous planning/execution and that our shows go off without a hitch.
We are known for our shows at Global Dance Festival, Supernatural, Foam Wonderland, and a plethora of shows at The Church Nightclub, Vinyl, and Temple as well as other venues all across Denver and Colorado as a whole.
We are most proud of Selling out our First AEG Venue headliner at Larimer Lounge 2 weeks prior to the show we had on February 22nd, 2024.
What sets us apart from others is the live aspect that we do for the shows we are able to bring drums and or lasers to. If there’s room, we bring the drums and play a “live set”. If there is no room, “BRING MORE PRODUCTION!!” We have started bringing out the vocalists that sing on some of our songs and even started singing on the songs that we ourselves tracked our vocals on!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The music industry is forever evolving. We’ve seen the takeover of Riddim, Tearout, and the return of DnB. As soon as it starts to get “stale”, someone in the scene does something different that others will try and emulate or use to try and create something new on top of that! “Flips” and “bootlegs” have been the move to try and get noticed by others in the scene and it has done very well for other artists in this scene along with content creation.
Gone are the days where you can just make a song, release it, and hope that it does well. There are a ton of new tools available to everyone now to give you more reach to have people find your music. From apps to AI, the sky is the limit. It’s how you work the system.
We have thought really hard on what we want to do for ourselves to get out to more listeners and have more opportunities to play more shows around the country. Content creation and cross posting to all social media platforms is how we are going to do it. Consistency is KEY!
