Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Shaw.
Hi Nick , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have known since a young age that I wanted to be a filmmaker. I attended college briefly on the East Coast, but the classroom setting wasn’t for me. When my partner and I moved to Colorado in 2021, I discovered the Colorado Film School. The School is much more like a trade program, which immediately drew me in as a hands on learner. I am in my final year of a 3 year associates program, where I shot a 16-day short horror film for my graduation thesis project.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I endured a lot of loss at a young age, and there have been many late nights as someone who works and goes to school full time, but I am thankful for where I am, grateful for the connections I have forged, and proud of what I have accomplished. My amazing partner, Katie, has been my guiding light. Without her patience and grace, I am not certain I would be here.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m not certain I specialize in anything, but I love to write and direct. It’s my one true passion. I love the challenges and collaboration a set environment brings. I love the community it forges as the days roll on and the nights get late. I think what I’m most proud of is the short film we shot over this past summer, WEREHOUSE.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was not the greatest kid in school. Lots of trouble and trips to the principal’s office. But I was kind and respectful to others, and my sense of humor was (and still is) my saving grace. I loved film from an early age and wanted to explore as much as I could. I was never afraid to not understand something and let the imagery take me somewhere. I always had my nose in a book or comic. Music was a huge piece of the puzzle for me. I played the guitar for about 5 years. But then sports and girls and beer became more of a priority.
