Check Out Nicole Natal’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Natal.

Nicole, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a little girl who loved watching behind the scenes of movies wishing she was a director to completing a degree at CU Denver in Theatre, Film, and Television Production graduating with an Emmy under my belt and a film in the Stanley Horror Film Festival. I moved to Los Angeles and worked on a nationally televised TV show to produce award-winning indie films. I love photography and shooting on 35mm film and believe it keeps all the skills of cinematography – sharp. I’m a sitting board member for the Denver-based non-profit organization Women in Film and Media Colorado.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I believe some of the most compelling stories are journeys that endured many storms. The struggles are with a saturated market and digital era where everyone is a content creator and photographer. The key is to be yourself and bring your own unique style to the table.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am passionate about 35mm film photography. My long-term goal is to write, direct and produce a feature-length feature on 16mm film stock with a majority female crew. I am deeply inspired by colors and like to experiment with the analog medium to create in-camera visual magic. I’m known for winning an Emmy Award in Los Angeles for a web series I directed which was also screened at the Denver Film Festival. What sets me apart is my creative brain, tenacity and photography aesthetic.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
To be honest, a mentor is something that I struggled to find in the industry. I did find one who is also a Latino and is a member of the Director’s Guild of America. Networking comes down to having authentic conversations with people and remaining curious with an open mind. I became a Membership Chair for the non-profit in Denver called, Women in Film and Media Colorado to network for myself and also help facilitate networking across the front range.
