Today we’d like to introduce you to Pedro Meyer.
Hi Pedro, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Music has always been around me and my life. My dad was a songwriter and guitar player and he was in love with all kinds of music, but it was my mother that introduced me to my first music inspirations: Eric Clapton and U2. The songwriting and guitar playing stuck with me so when I turned 14 I started taking guitar lessons. I would have started earlier but I lived in a tough neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and didn’t have the freedom that a lot of other kids enjoyed.
I stuck with it throughout my whole life and started writing as soon as I had the playing skills to do so. I used to have to take 2 buses and walk 30 minutes to record my first song in Brazil. Poorly produced, written, and composed but I knew it was what I wanted to do forever. Many years later and with a lot of experience gained, now I record most of my music from home. Every day I think of all the obstacles I had and that fuels my music, lyrics, and my life every day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most definitely not. In my native city, it was hard to find people who like rock and roll like I did, let alone being able to afford decent gear. I used to haul a 100w amp everywhere I went because it was what I had available. Money was always hard to come by but also inspiration and community. To this day I don’t feel like I learned how to find my music community and have been searching for a long time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started my musical journey as a guitar player but have always seen myself as a songwriter first. Writing songs and telling stories with the instruments is the most powerful thing you can do in music. A lot of people see me as a guitar player, and even though I write a lot of “guitar music”, as it is my goal to bring that type of composition back, I am mainly a songwriter and lyricist, most of all, a storyteller.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
