Today we’d like to introduce you to RJ Hughes.

Hi RJ, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was a professional dancer in Las Vegas for nearly 10 years, most recently in the show Jubilee on the Las Vegas Strip. The show ended up closing after nearly 36 years and I needed a backup plan. The only thing I could think of was how much I enjoyed being in a hair salon with my mother and grandmother growing up and thought I might want to consider a career in the beauty industry. My husband was my main encourager when I told him I was considering this big change and we went to tour Paul Mitchell the School in Las Vegas and I absolutely fell in love and we enrolled me and I began my schooling just a few weeks later. Upon graduating I assisted a world-renowned stylist, Gela Peeler, at the most beautiful salon I’ve ever seen, Square Colour Salon. I assisted Gela for over two years before deciding to move home to Colorado to be closer to family. My husband and I opened Tease Hair Design Studio in July of 2016 and had no idea that we would grow so rapidly and now have 23 amazing beauty professionals working at the salon. We are humbled and grateful for this journey and where it’s taken us so far and my love for Colorado has grown immensely. The people here love hard, support locals, and appreciate quality work and service.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A big struggle was transitioning from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas and performing nightly to the more relaxed vibe that I’ve grown to love here in Colorado. It took a while to find my niche in the hair scene here and the biggest game changer was partnering with BELLAMI Professional to offer high-end hair extensions in our salon. My husband actually gifted a BELLAMI master hair extensionist class to me for my 30th birthday and that’s how I was introduced to the brand. It’s just taken off in southern Colorado and has completely boosted our salon to the next level.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in blonding and hair extensions. My favorite aspect of hair extensions is the immediate confidence boost I am able to offer my guests and although I no longer am dancing professionally, this has been another creative outlet that has satisfied my craving for art and I couldn’t be happier doing what I love every day.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I hope to see our salon grow and expand, possibly to multiple locations throughout Colorado and eventually beyond! I would love to host more educational hair classes and would even consider teaching myself. The need for self-care, and hair styling in particular, will never go away. Even in desperate times, it’s one-way people can feel great about themselves and I see this industry thriving for centuries to come.
