Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Rice.
Hi Rodney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started into music while growing up in West Virginia. Since picking up the guitar, music has always been with me. I have traveled around the country, first kayaking and raft guiding on various rivers then working in mines and oil rigs. It has allowed me to meet many characters from all walks of life. These characters and life experiences eventually end up in the music in some form.
After making two records down in Austin, TX at the Congress House studio. I wanted to head to East Nashville because I was drawn to all the great sounds coming from The Bombshelter. Now I find myself surrounded by all these great folks on all aspects of this record. I am really looking forward to getting this album out to the world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The players Drew Carroll lined out (producer/engineer) were top-shelf, and the sessions flew by. The recording was all done in a matter of a few days. Some aspects are smooth, like recording at the Bombshelter. But the majority of the work goes into the project after that. Being an independent artist, there was a huge learning curve about all these other details. The great people involved in all the different aspects have been pivotal to the quality of this record. I am humbled by the kindness and encouragement everyone involved has shown.
This is a hustle; being played on outlets nationwide (i.e. public/community radio, satellite radio) is excellent, but connecting those dots without a booking agent is a constant struggle.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician, songwriter, and performer. Most proud of working with others who do what they love, be it musicians, graphic artists, photography, videography, press/pr.
Watching a song go from an idea to a finished track is significant metamorphism. The energy is contagious when you are around people who are genuinely passionate about what they do. It takes many people to bring music to your ears no matter where you listen.
What matters most to you?
Staying humble by searching for the feeling of insignificance which I find in the outdoors. And connecting with people through music by delivering the best recording or performance I can at that moment in time.
