Check Out Roxey Grant’s Story

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Roxey Grant.

Roxey Grant

Roxey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

I’m the embodiment of cultural fusion, born to Jamaican-Belizean immigrant mother in Yonkers, New York. I was raised in the small town of Deland, Florida, and now I’ve called Denver home for the past eight years. I navigate the complexities of finance as a Licensed Investment Advisor and Broker Dealer. For fun, I’m a comedian. I’ve hopped on stages across Colorado to bring laughter to strangers. You can find me delivering ‘the haha’s’  at iconic venues like Comedy Works, The Comedy Fort, Dairy Arts Center, Rise Comedy, and many others.

My passion for the art of comedy has blossomed over the past four years. Comedy is my lifeline, my much-needed escape from the pressures of the office. On stage, you’re a hero for a couple of minutes. You feel that way anyway. Making people snort and cackle should be considered a superpower. Starting out, I stumbled into the world of stand-up with little more than a sense of humor and a desire to learn. Yet, with each performance I continue to hone my craft, balancing the art and the science of laughter. Trying not to take for granted the privilege of connecting with audiences through shared moments of catharsis.

Beyond the stage, I find solace in my other creative pursuits. I write music I like to challenge myself in the kitchen by whipping up extravagant meals from different cultures I come across. And of course, there’s nothing quite like coming home to the warm embrace of my partner Alex Menos and our lively trio of pets—two endearing cats named Puddin & Crackers and our newest addition, the adorable puppy Sherbet. In their company, amidst cuddles and playful antics, I find true contentment. My little family reminds me that amidst life’s chaos, there’s always room for love, laughter, and the simple pleasures that make it all the hardwork worthwhile.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

My journey has taught me resilience and self-reliance. From the age of 13, I’ve been hustling to make ends meet, navigating a childhood marked by instability, abuse, and homelessness. By the time I was 17, I found myself shouldering the financial burden of a six-person household in Denver, only to be abruptly kicked out by my mentally unstable mother over a trivial disagreement. Despite the challenges, I’ve learned to land on my feet, working various jobs in childcare, retail sales, the fine dining & bar scene, and now in the financial sector.

While the estrangement from my family brings its own share of pain, I take pride in the life I’ve built for myself without their support. It’s disheartening that we’re not close, especially since coming out as nonbinary and pansexual, a revelation I came to with my therapist. My truth freed me and brought me so much joy, but it was met with the rejection of my parents, due to their religious beliefs. Yet, amidst the distance, I’ve found solace and acceptance in my little brother Ro-Mel and the love of my partner Alex Menos and his family.

Despite the hardships, with my family I’ve forged a deep bond with my little brother Ro-Mel Grant, and that connection brings me immense belonging and comfort. My journey has taught me that family isn’t just about blood ties; it’s about the relationships we nurture and the love we give and receive. Through it all, I’ve learned to embrace my true self, standing firm in my sense of worth and authenticity. My story is one of courage, and the power of forging your own path, even in the face of adversity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

I work as a Licensed Financial Advisor and Broker-Dealer for my firm’s executive clientele. Because of my Licenses and my NDA, I can’t go into much detail about what I do specifically. What I can share is my journey in the financial sector. I had some visionary mentors who truly believed in me.

They pushed me to achieve goals I didn’t even know I was capable of. When I started I didn’t know the difference between a stock and a bond. Four years later, and I’m working with my firm’s top clients. I know numbers, spreadsheets, and legal jargon sounds so mundane to most people. But it’s exhilarating for me and I feel fulfilled even after a long day.
