Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Jane Murphy.
Hi Ryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been an artist fluent in various mediums for a very long time…or at least… a bit all over the place with them; I started painting with a love for Van Gogh at a very young age, grew fond of Tim Burton’s poetry a bit later in elementary school then decided to try my hand at writing, within a few years was introduced to the movie Jaws through an innocent autobiography assignment which started my ultimate goal to create my own horror films. Upon being gifted a camera from my father around my 12th birthday, I began to play around with photography, which has now evolved into my (current) main medium. I have heavy early roots in self-photography/modeling due to being a bit nervous about working with anyone else in a medium that felt a bit more personal to me. Though I feel as if I have gotten extremely better at collaborating with others on projects (in fact, I really do adore it when everyone is relatively close on the same page), I still get anxious at times about sharing some of my art & ideas with others because art really is a coping mechanism for me than anything else. Outside of self-photography, I enjoy taking photos of unique still-life sets, interesting creatures and creative people. Photographing things that are striking and cause one to pause & ponder are my favorites. Working with those who are more about the art rather than the money it may produce are the type of people I love working with.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I do not make it a secret that I have struggle with some mental health issues knowingly for a good part of my life. Having depression, anxiety and PTSD have made me see life in a way I notice some others do not. I seem to have a really hard time verbally communicating these things to people as well, so sometimes it really is easier for me to make art about it to hopefully make others see in a different point of view & gain a little more understanding. Outside the various obstacles life has thrown my way along with my …interesting… brain, the issue that I have been spending the most time trying to process lately is losing my house in the Marshall Fires a few months ago. My roommates and I had about five minutes to evacuate & I was only able to get a few of my animals and a small bag before I had to leave everything I once knew. There was no time to grab any of my art, years’ worth of memories, aquatic friends or other favorite items. It seems like no one really understands the weight & impact of an event like that until it happens to them personally, unfortunately. One of the bittersweet truths I have had to realize is that if I was better about being open and sharing my art with the world, more pieces of mine would be out with cherishing owners rather than ashes to the wind. (However, there seems to be a bit of a comforting thought of my art being returned to the universe for me. Another weird thought I have trouble explaining which probably means I’ll do a piece based around the it later.)
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently consider myself to be a Photographer, Creative Director and Freelance Model, but always have a bit of a hard time putting myself in a specific category since I am constantly moving from one medium to another. I specialize in slow-shutter portrait photography along with creating unique scenarios for artistic purposes. I am aspiring to be more bold with pops of color in melodramatic or horror-esque scenes in which most would thrive on simply the ‘darkness’ element.
