Check Out Sally Bleck’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Bleck.

Hi Sally, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I used to make gifts for friends and that evolved into them wanting customs, then their friends wanting their own customs. In the past, I used to do a lot of traveling for music and that gave me a platform to sell across the US in person! Over the years, I have shifted from selling at music events/on a lot to selling online through my own website. In the beginning, I embroidered a lot more band-related hats and now I primarily focus on plants and landscapes. I will forever be exploring that space for your head space!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Trying to find the correct work/life balance has been my biggest challenge. Doing everything as a one-man show is hard- but knowing I have a great community to lean on for advice is so valuable! I shifted to doing art full-time six months ago and just having to make the mistake to learn from it stings sometimes.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I tell stories through hand embroidery. I especially like to tell stories of exploring and adventure in all its forms! I recently embroidered a topo map of Berthoud Pass as a gift to a big bro from his kid sister. It told the story of him guiding her through her first back-country ski adventures and learning the safety skills to do so responsibly on her own and the courage she gained with his help. I like those behind-the-scenes stories one would never know just by looking at that topo embroidery.

I taught my first embroidery workshop this fall at a retreat held outside of Big Sky, Montana named Dare to Detour bringing women together to share experiences and realign with themselves through adventure and connection. That gave me a lot of insight to the skill I have in my own craft, somewhat unknown before this.

I try to work on as many ethically sourced hats/products as possible and have found a great company named Storied Hats that ethically and sustainably sources materials for their hats! I am always on the lookout for vintage denim to work on, but I enjoy the hunt.

Every single thing I sell is one of a kind, even if they look similar because everything is done by hand, they are all 100% their own!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Thoughtfulness has really set me apart from others. I get the comment all the time (that I’m very much proud of) that the onlookers can see the intention I put in my pieces.
