Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Yamini.
Hi Sam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in southern New Mexico and started skateboarding early in life. The influence of Hip Hop culture on skateboarding and seeing the local gang graffiti converged on my impressionable young mind. I started getting heavy into graffiti and counterculture. When it came time to grow up and be an adult, I couldn’t bring myself to go to college and get a job. I wanted to be able to live life on my own terms. Luckily through my pursuit of art and creating as a living, tattooing found me.
I moved from my hometown of Las Cruces to Dallas, Texas. Worked in a few shops there before moving to Denver.
I have been in Denver for 13 years now. And opened Dedication Tattoo with some close friends in 2013.
I’m super lucky to have built an exceptional clientele made up of tremendous people here who let me be creative for a living! AND I get to work with some of my best friends.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like over all my journey has been fairly smooth. Or rather, I choose to view the journey with a positive perspective. Struggles are natural, and I wouldn’t be or couldn’t be who I am without them. So I am grateful!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I practice a couple of different avenues of art. Painting, sculpture, glass, and above all, tattooing. All of my work is informed primarily by Horimono, or traditional Japanese bodysuit tattooing. I try to translate and adapt the motifs of this practice across all the mediums I create in, but I’m probably most known for my Large scale Japanese work. I do a LOT of sleeves, full legs, and back pieces. My goal is to do as many body suits as possible! So if you’re in the market, get at me!
What do you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think that I have a strong understanding of composition and placement on the body that gives my work good movement and power. But asking me to define what sets me apart is a tough question! I think you would have to ask some of my clients to answer that one!
What are your plans for the future?
All I truly want to do with the future is make the best art I possibly can! We also have some potential expansion ideas on deck for Dedication Tattoo so keep an eye out!
