Hi Sanaz, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Sanaz Merchi and I’m a board-certified pediatric dentist. I was born in Iran to a Baha’i family, which meant that our family faced even more limitations and restrictions than the average Muslim family due to the domineering Islamic Regime presiding over the nation. In order to have the freedom of choice and a chance at higher education, we immigrated to the states at the turn of the millenium. Immigrating to a new land at such a young age, brought its own challenges, including the initial culture shock that tested my adaptability. Undeterred, I embraced the opportunity to create a new life with my family and worked tirelessly to transform my dreams into reality.

Through dedication and perseverance, I pursued my aspirations with unwavering commitment. Overcoming hurdles that came my way, I emerged stronger and more focused than ever. Guided by a passion for helping others, I channeled my efforts towards the field of dentistry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly has not been an easy journey. My early years were marked by a brave move to a new country, where the language and customs were vastly different. The initial language barrier posed a significant challenge, often leaving me feeling isolated and misunderstood. However, this obstacle fueled my determination to bridge the gap, driving me to immerse myself in language-learning endeavors and push beyond my comfort zone.

Navigating the intricate tapestry of cultural differences proved to be another formidable test. Customs that were unfamiliar at first gradually became familiar through observation, trial, and error. Adapting to a new way of life required patience and a willingness to learn from my surroundings. Over time, I transformed these cultural differences into opportunities for growth, broadening my perspective and enriching my identity.

One of my most arduous struggles was coming to terms with not possessing innate talent in certain areas. This was especially evident as I pursued my dreams in dentistry. Recognizing my limitations, I embraced a growth mindset and focused on honing my skills through sheer determination and practice. With time, my perceived lack of innate talent transformed into a testament to my work ethic and resilience, showing me that success can be achieved through consistent effort and unwavering commitment.

Today, as a board-certified pediatric dentist, I stand as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance in the face of adversity. My journey from Iran to where I am now exemplifies the importance of pushing beyond limitations, embracing change, and working diligently to achieve what was once thought unattainable

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a provider with Perfect Teeth for Kids for about a little over 9 months now. 

In addition to diagnostic and restorative care, I offer laser dentistry to correct lip and tongue ties when affecting speech in young children as well as complete oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia for younger children who require sedation.

What do you think about happiness?
Spending quality time with loved ones gives me great inner peace and happiness. Baking, with its alchemical blend of ingredients, offers me a creative escape and the pleasure of crafting something delightful from scratch. Boxing, on the other hand, is a powerful outlet for stress and a means of pushing my physical and mental boundaries, leaving me invigorated and empowered. Yoga provides a serene balance, a practice that nurtures both body and mind, fostering a deep sense of tranquility. Lastly, exploring the great outdoors allows me to reconnect with the beauty of nature, offering moments of awe and solitude that rejuvenate my spirit. Each of these pursuits enriches my life in unique ways, cultivating happiness through creative expression, challenge, serenity, and natural wonder.
