Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Hanson
Hi Sara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Though I didn’t know it at the time, my journey as an artist started when I began oil painting in my colorful Madrid flat back in 2021. For the past two years, I’ve been home building my body of work in Denver’s Santa Fe arts district.
My work is inspired by the beautiful places and cultures I’ve experienced over the years. My time in Spain taught me how much I value creativity, community, and presence. I hope to continue expressing this through my work as I grow my skills and explore more of my interests.
I offer original oil paintings and Giclée prints of my work. Thanks to the remarkable Denver Art society, I’ve been able to exhibit my work for the past two years while meeting dozens remarkable people along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Insecurity around being an artist has been my biggest challenge. I, like many people, grew up with the belief that success has to look a certain way to mean something. When I started as a professional artist, I found myself caught up in self-doubt based on others’ perceptions about artists. Rather than giving into doubt and focusing on the challenges of this lifestyle, I’ve leaned into my creativity and focused on living in alignment with my values. I see now that success is a deeply personal journey, and it looks different for everyone. We all have a personal legend to pursue.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I grew up learning to paint with acrylics, but oils have recently stolen my heart. Process-wise, I use reference photos that I’ve taken as a guide for my paintings. From there I pay close attention to contrast and light. Over several weeks, I focus on layering lights and darks to give each painting depth. My work covers a range of subjects, from vibrant fruits to romantic cityscapes. I like to explore non-traditional perspectives, and my photography has improved as a result.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There is always room to grow, and maintaining an open-mind is key. Small steps in the right direction are more important than big steps in the wrong direction. I’ve also seen how comparison is a killer of creativity. Artists are stronger when we can uplift each other and be a source of inspiration for one another.
