Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Monteith.
Hi Sara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always wanted to be an artist when I was young. When someone would ask me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I’d say “artist” or “teacher”. I didn’t have an example in my life of someone who pursued the arts as a career so of course, I didn’t pursue it. But I always dabbled and it took me a long time to find photography as a medium.
I always say, I just kept saying yes to one thing at a time. One step in front of the other. One day at a time.
I never thought I’d be able to make a living being an artist. I am grateful to end up where I am now every day. I’ve always been fascinated by human connection and the psychology behind why we are the way we are. Being able to explore that aspect of our humanity with a camera in my hand has been a beautiful way for me to channel how I want to experience the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth going for is ever easy. Our lives as artists are often marred by struggle. I believe if you are truly meant to do something, to pursue something, to understand something; you will find your way. So it’s one step in front of the other. When I was first pursuing photography as a possible hobby/career path, I was also pursuing motherhood. I struggled and sacrificed a lot to do the little that I could at the time. I just kept chipping away until I found my well.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a documentary photographer, specializing in events, families and elopements. I focus on present and intentional couples, families and organizations that see joy as resilience and magic in the every day. I capture events for the Jefferson County Public Library and many other non-profits around the Front Range. I love seeing people come together for all sorts of events and celebrations from non-profit galas to 90th birthday parties. I focus on the human connection of each event I document, bringing an authentic representation of how it felt to be there, not just what it looked like.
