Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Harris.
Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved here from MN in 2009. I had just wrapped up an apprentice program where I focused my craft on cutting and styling hair. I quickly came to find out that finding a salon that would let me focus specifically on cutting was not going to happen. So I went through another apprentice program for color and it just wasn’t my thing. When that wrapped up, I was like shoot. I need a job! At the time there was a men’s salon hiring downtown and I thought to myself this will work for now, men are mostly getting their haircut, I’ll work here and figure it out. Well, little did I know it was my destiny. When it comes to a guy getting his hair cut, once they find what they like, they never leave! So I was working my booty off just building up a book.
During this time evolution of men’s self-care was evolving. We were coming out of the “don’t make me look too metro.” To “Ok I want to style my hair, make sure my nails and skin look good and I’m fine visiting a nice salon/spa to get that.” It’s been really fun to grow with the industry. Over the past 13 years, I’ve worked at a few different salons, dragging my clients all over town. I’ve received my barbering license, been an educator, worked on photo shoots and runway shows. In 2018 I finally went out on my own with the help of my husband Jonny and my assistant Bobbi we opened Routine Barbering and haven’t looked back. I have been very fortunate to find a career that has given me more than just financial stability. It’s really given me the best friends, life lessons, and opportunities to grow as a woman.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I had was making the final decision to go out on my own.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I cut men’s hair. But I like to say I love cutting short hair. Since my bread and butter has always been cutting and I started out with my cosmetology license, I would say I’m known for my scissor cuts. I’m most proud of my ability to change and grow with what’s new in hair and the business I’ve created by doing so.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The biggest change in our industry was social media. It gave all hairstylists the ability to run their own business. I think the change we’ll continue to see small 2-3 person salons become even more popular.
