Check Out Selena Munoz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena Munoz.

Selena Munoz

Hi Selena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We are three sisters, all with vastly different backgrounds; we wanted to come together and make something we could all contribute to and bring us and the community closer. We aimed to create a happy space for us and the people around us. All three of us have had various plants and plant experiences throughout our lives.

I (Selena) kept cactus and succulents as a hobby and self-care outlet for many years. Amber leaned more towards foliage and tropical plants. While Alex later came in loving all types. During the pandemic, plants became a larger source of joy for all three of us and when we saw the opportunity to rent the space in LoHi, we knew we had to jump in.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We nearly missed our opening date due to zoning and permitting issues with the city, COVID also played a role in the processing and timing! However, about a week before we were set to open, we received the “all clear” and we were able to open on our set date!

As for current or ongoing struggles, I’d have to say ordering and anticipating popular trends. When purchasing items for the shop, it’s hard to know what is going to sell best. So I end up running out of certain items one week, then have an abundance of the same item another week.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A major goal of ours is to build community.

We offer events where people can come together and paint a pot for their plant, create a terrarium, plant an arrangement, or craft a bundle of florals for their homes. LoHi is an area with new people entering all the time, our shop events can provide a sense of community and an opportunity to meet others in the area.

We also strive to provide service and advice you may not receive at larger retail stores. We want our customers to leave our shop feeling prepared to take care of their new plant friend.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When we were all young, our family took a trip to The Great Sand Dunes. It was hot and windy and the snow melt was deep and running through the dunes.

Even though the weather was harsh, I remember playing in the water and the sand with my sisters and having “our kind of beach day”. My Dad built us sand castle race cars! It’s a really sweet memory.
