Check Out Steph Lippert’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steph Lippert.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Since 2010, I have been actively working as a pianist, singer-songwriter, bass trombonist, and music educator in “The Good Land” of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I grew up near Port Washington, WI, and relocated to Milwaukee to further my musical career and education at UW-Milwaukee in Piano & Trombone performance. During this time, I enjoyed many countless collaborations in schools, churches, and music, and art communities, as a multi-instrumental collaborator.

Growing up, music was always something that I knew I was born to do. The piano was the first instrument that I set eyes on and I was hooked! I was very fortunate to find a dear member of my local church growing up that instilled a deep curiosity and passion for music. Classical music was my main background and interest at the time. My first piano teacher, Kari Brich, was, however, very supportive of me delving into other instruments outside of my main studies. Along the way, there have been multitudes of teachers, mentors, and friends that have helped supported and enriched my life with love through music.

These days, I’m not really working in the classical music world so much, and it’s been what feels like a whole 360 change up on the vibes and musical adventures I’m curating and tapping into. My main focus is fronting my band, The Steph Lippert Project. It is exactly what it sounds like. I had no idea that I would plan on writing songs until they more or less popped out in my earlier 20s. Fast forward to the pandemic times, and the band came to be. Lot’s more on that to come!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that for the most part, it has been a smooth path because I’ve always stayed true to what I wanted-that was always music. There is nothing that I want to do with my life more than music. The struggles have been the other outside noises and personal distractions that have at times led me away from the truth.

I’d say the biggest struggle was when the Pandemic hit. Nothing could have possibly topped that. I never imagined that I wouldn’t be playing music, so when that happened… I felt lost sonically. Eventually, I found my footing, which gave birth to the band that I’m currently working on curating.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’d say professionally for a long while, I was known more for my skills as a (classical) collaborative pianist. Then it sort of switched to singing and collaborating with other band bands… like haul gear, and sound check type bands. In general, I’d say that I’m known for being musically versatile across genres and multiple instruments.

Right now, my main focus has been working on being a Bandleader/Front Woman of The Steph Lippert project. This is a new project that started in the Spring of 2021.

I’d like to say that it’s picking up traction! A recent moment that I’m most proud of was the release of my first music video for my original song “Which Witch?”. The video was filmed and produced in-house by two of my bandmates, Frank Martinelli-keys and Dena Aronson-aux percussion. The music was recorded by my music partner/bandleader, Vincent Kircher (Jaill, L’Resorts). https://youtu.be/YLcT_5Eg-50

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to just keep going and trust the path. I’ve put in many hours, and I still don’t quite know where it’s all going to take me, but I’ve been delightfully surprised at many points at opportunities that have sprung up along the way.

Right now I’m still actively learning to trust the process and be patient. Sometimes it feels like things aren’t happening fast enough or how you want them to, but there are so many other pieces in the machine outside of myself.
