Today we’d like to introduce you to Sturtz. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Andrew Sturtz has been performing as a singer-songwriter for over 20 years, but this particular arrangement of musicians came to be in 2019. Our band started as friends of Andrew’s playing together occasionally and has formed into a main project for most of us.
Sturtz’s music stands out for its distinctive, soothing instrumental and vocal harmonies. NPR’s All Songs Considered described the band as “a reassuring breath of fresh air that pulls me back to simpler times.” The acoustic quartet – Andrew Sturtz [vocals, guitar], Courtlyn Carpenter [cello, harmonies], Will Kuepper [bass, harmonies], and Jim Herlihy [banjo, harmonies] – is serene and folksy, with melodic vocals soaring over the lower string instrumentals.
Sturtz released their debut album You’ve Done This Before in August 2021, and now they are hard at work recording a second album that is set to be released in the Summer of 2024. When they’re not playing music, you’ll probably find them milling flour, farming, laying in a creek, or eating native foliage.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a generally smooth road for us! Any musician faces challenges getting booked before having an album and finding community early on, but I feel like we’ve made strong headway there.
We formed as an official band right before the COVID-19 pandemic, so that influenced our growth early on. We were able to become a Covid pod and work on an album from 2020-2021 though, so that was a good thing!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our band has four folks in it – Andrew is the only person who sings lead, but we all sing harmonies. We also all play an instrument – guitar, cello, banjo, and bass.
We’re excited to be working on a new album this winter that is slated to release in Summer 2024. We’re working with Ben Wysocki (drummer for the Fray) on this album, and we expect it to be sadder/moodier than the last one. We’re also planning to incorporate a couple of new instruments. Stay tuned!
Another thing we’re proud of is co-hosting a concert series with 63rd St. Farm in Boulder, CO, that allows us to showcase the talent of other local and touring musicians we respect. This will be our third year hosting this series, and it’s a wonderful way to uplift others and bring the music community closer together. We book this series, run sound, and run the door.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
Yes! We’re grateful to get to be a part of such a thriving music scene on Colorado’s Front Range.
Our fellow musicians and venues have been hugely supportive of us and our music, and we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without this wonderful community.
