Today we’d like to introduce you to Syd Latimore
Hi Syd, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started as a performer at a young age of 8 years old in plays, junior dance groups and even church. After coming out of the closet, I eventually got a job at Universal Studios theme park in Orlando as a professional stilt-walker, roller-skater, actor, dancer, and did comedy improv and burlesque on the side. Over the years of perfecting my craft, I saw a lack of representation for masc women and sapphics in the LGBTQ entertainment community and started Tomboii Burlesque in late 2021 in Orlando, FL. After a successful run, my partner and I started traveling around the US in our RV, searching for new locations to host sapphic events featuring Tomboii and my partner’s femme-lesbian burlesque troupe “Syrens Burlesque.” With our combinative skills of dance and a little imagination, we formed our traveling events company “Womxn Events” to empower other sapphics and provide wild parties we have never seen before in the community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! Many people have told us it wouldn’t work, that it would flop, we’ve even had friends turn against us because of the exploitative nature of burlesque. We’ve had people online try to tear us down because they felt it was excluding other parts of the LGBTQIA+ community but we simply wanted a safe space for womxn like us and to show appreciation for sapphics in a community that is still led by men and drag-queens. It’s very hard, even today, to get booked at gay clubs because of the favoritism that is in our community, but we carry on!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mostly known in the corporate world for making films and visual effects for big companies. I love the entertainment business in all facets, but I specialize in video editing, visual effects, 3D, and my graphic work, as well as entertaining on stage. I’m mostly proud of the film festivals I’ve had my films in (OIF, Spooky Empire ), being interviewed on Late Night with James Yon for one of my films (Afrotainment), and the major companies my film work have been featured on (Roku Channel, AMC Network, and Disney). I feel what sets me apart from others is that I have many talents they have been showcased in many different areas of business, and I cant be more proud for being blessed with all the opportunities I have in my life.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is getting a bike my mother couldn’t afford, being delivered to my door anonymously. I’ve never forgotten that.
