Check Out Theresa Huffman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Huffman.

Hi Theresa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up surrounded by entrepreneurial and creative people. My parents were farmers (the ultimate entrepreneurs!). My grandmother was a self-taught artist, and many of my family members inherited her artistic abilities. I was always drawing, painting, and crafting as a child. When I was 10 years old, I won a poster drawing contest and my prize was a set of oil paints. Some of my fondest memories growing up are of painting alongside my grandma. Several years ago, when my boys were preschoolers, I painted a mural in our home. When a friend saw it, she asked me to paint a mural in her kids’ bedrooms. Then another friend asked, and another, and another… and before I knew it, I had a mural painting side-gig. When my boys entered elementary school, I got a “real” job and painting took a back seat. However, I always dreamed of owning my own creative business. Fast forward to January 2020. I was laid off from my contract sales position and all that I could think about was going back to doing what I am passionate about, which is painting and creating. The thought of another boring office job made my stomach hurt so I took the plunge and launched “Murals & More by Theresa”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been some challenges, and opportunities to learn and grow. Right after I made the decision to launch my business, COVID shut everything down. I had to learn how to make connections virtually, and a lot of the potential customers/businesses that I were targeting were closed. Every mural that I paint is an opportunity to develop new skills or learn to adapt to the situation/environment.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I believe that everyone should live and work in a space that inspires them and reflects their unique personalities and interests. I love it when a client comes to me with an idea, and I can work with their concepts to create something that we can both be proud of. I care deeply about creating something that my client can’t wait to show off to their friends. I get really excited to see the joy on my client’s face when they see their room or wall that was painted especially for them. A great deal of the work that I have done has been in children’s spaces, and I love using bold, bright colors. One of the more popular themes has been mountain scenes. A recent project that I completed in Parker was for a couple who asked me to transform their boring concrete window wells in their basement to windows with mountain and forest views.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Because I’m haven’t received any formal training as an artist, a lot of what I have learned has been trial and error. I’m determined to keep working on a piece until it is right. It’s important for me to be humble and to be willing to reach out to ask for help and advice.
