Today we’d like to introduce you to Thorn Gaskill.
Hi Thorn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my parents where huge horror movie and metal fans. They showed me “Night Of The Living Dead” and every Rob Zombie music video on their collectors DVD by the time I was 4 years old. So of course, that shapes a person. Art in all mediums is my escape. In middle and high school I participated in local shows and art venues. The feedback and kudos ignited my dream of pursuing the creative world. Especially in those days when I first started really struggling with my mental health. I dipped my toes in modeling February of 2024, one of my friends photographed a creative project I put together. I walked my first runway in August of last year, which really pushed me into the community. Creating has really helped me transition into each new phase I enter in life. With the loss of my mom and still learning how to navigate life. This healthy means of escape without a doubt, saved my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Each path has varied in their challenges for sure, and every experience brings something new to overcome and power through. Within all these channels however, I would say the common struggle is the unnecessarily competitive nature. Especially in this climate with AI. The world is big enough for all of us to shine. And the level of emotional violence that can occur between us creatives in the name of ambition can be disheartening to say the least. We must remember that joy is rebellion, our creations are a beautiful way of resisting a world that tries to take the soul out of everything. We can fight any system we want to with our creativity, together.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Throughout the years I’ve experimented with clay, acrylic, charcoal, oil, watercolor, you name it. When I was first participating in art shows, my watercolors where the popular pieces. Which I think is cool to see where my skills are more appreciated vs the projects that are more for fun, rather than a statement. These days modeling and making jewelry have been my primary focus. The amount of support and inquiry I receive on my necklaces and earrings is what feeds that fire within me. I still paint, however, wire wrapping bones and fragments from the nature around me into wearable art is more fulfilling. While modeling allows me to be a part of the art, and immerse myself completely. It has been the space for me to make amazing friends who have taught me such profound love and community. To be able to capture that, is art.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
There’s always room in the community for more creatives! If anyone is unsure about their talents or thinks they aren’t good enough to show their art, stop it. All handmade art is good art! We all start somewhere and the more you contribute, the more diverse and inspiring the world becomes. Sit in your favorite spot with a good drink, a snack, and put your soul into something you want to bring into this world. I guarantee you’ll find your place along the way.
