Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Kosec.
Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up on the Western Slope a lot closer to Utah than Denver, there’s not much to do in my hometown so my friends and I always skateboarded and played in bands together. We all also grew up watching skate videos and Jackass, so there was always a camera around trying to film something funny or cool. As we started to take the bands more serious, we had a need for photos and videos beyond making us laugh. Once I realized that I dove in headfirst, got my first DSLR camera, and started shooting all my friends. A few years later I moved to Denver, and have been so lucky to be greeted by all these amazing creators down here.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I could say it’s been hard but I think I just like to complain. There’s always obstacles but if you’re truly doing the work, you should be doing, you’ll know that an obstacle is an opportunity to learn. That’s corny but it’s very true to my experience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly shoot and edit Videos or Photos for bands in the Delver area. I also shoot weddings, commercials, create websites, and branding for people, but the music scene is absolutely my comfort zone.
I’m lucky in that I already had my foot in the door with the Denver Metal/Hardcore scene from playing shows with everyone, so when I started creating videos, I already had a small built-in audience that was ready to support me.
I think within that scene I’d be known for creating video & images that are chaotic and vibrant, but still cinematic and tell a good story.
It feels really nice when an artist whose work I enjoy and appreciate, feels the same about something I’ve made. I’ve been so lucky to become friends with a lot people I’ve looked up to, and our art is the only thing that made that a reality, I’m definitely most proud of that.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Before my camera was paying any bills, I was a full-time Knife Sharpener.
