Check Out Tyler Russell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Russell.

Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started in 2018 when I lost my wallet and opted to try and make my own using some basic tools I had found on Amazon. I was using a wallet that probably cost $15 and had no sentimental value, outside of the things inside of it (credit card, ID, etc.). When I lost it, I could have cared less about the wallet, and now was stuck with the hassle of getting all new cards – that’s where it all began. Maybe if I cared more about the wallet I was carrying – I wouldn’t have let it get away. Anyways, it started as a quick project to make something for me before turning into a few quick gifts for family and friends around the holiday.

When they got those ‘secret Santa’ gifts in 2018, that is when I started getting a little validation. They thought these basic wallets were amazing. They suggested I make more designs and styles and sell them. All of that sounds great, but I very much had a full-time job, so any progress at HFA Goods would have to take place after the hours of 9 pm… and it did. In early 2019 I launched my first website and attended my first market in June 2019 and the rest is history. Now HFA Goods has shipped items to 20+ states, and multiple countries and continues to grow its product list.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any small business – it depends on how you define the word ‘smooth’.

My definition may be different from the next person’s. I would like to consider a natural progression that I have had control over. If I want to spend time on it and focus on it, I can. If I want to slow down and make less – I can do that as well. There are always going to be obstacles and whatnot, I like to think that how you navigate them is what creates that smooth road.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have spent the last 10 years working in the world of youth sports – specifically the sport of lacrosse. The blending of that world plus the world of leather goods has always been a great balance.

HFA Goods started as a way to create a new wallet for me, but subconsciously it was also a way for me to relax, use my creative skills, and zone out after long days with 5-15-year-old kids. Sitting down and crafting, having a drink, and working late into the night was the perfect remedy.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The road is not smooth, nor is it the same for everyone. Find a balance that works for you, and stick with it. If it’s something you are passionate about, be ready to embrace it and make time for it. Lastly, surround yourself with folks that are going to cheer you on.
