Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tylor Herbert.
Hi Tylor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with photography began when I was 18 years old, I was fascinated with documenting moments of my life and the beauty around me. I loved how I could capture nostalgia and happiness, to be able to look back at the photos I took and feel the same happiness I felt when taking them. Nature photography is what originally inspired me to pick up a camera but I also have a huge draw to humanity.
I love meeting new people, getting to know people, and documenting the love within their relationships, family, and self. In 2018, I decided to incorporate the two, I wanted to document that love and nostalgia for people while also embodying the beauty of nature. I began practicing with families, couples, individuals, and basically anyone who would let me take their photo. I was constantly self-educating myself in any way I possibly could.
I soon realized that I didn’t want to do anything else other than photography, it completely consumed my life in the best way. In 2020, I moved to Littleton, Colorado. It was the best decision I’ve ever made, the space Colorado gave me to create was so inspiring. In an attempt to start my business here, Covid-19 had other plans. I resorted to Nature photography to fill the void and lack of human interaction that I so desperately missed.
When the world went back to normal, I knew I had to start trying again. I was so eager and motivated to capture humanity again. I met so many wonderful families, couples, and individuals. I created so many wonderful relationships that I wouldn’t change for the world.
In 2022, I decided to take the leap and quit my corporate job to pursue photography full-time. It has been such a rewarding choice even though it’s been stressful and scary at times. I am forever thankful that I bet on myself because the benefit has strongly outweighed the detriment. As of 2024, I am still a full-time business owner and doing what I love and what inspires me every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have definitely run into obstacles and challenges while trying to build and sustain my small photography business. Moving to a new state and then immediately being hit with a pandemic was a huge obstacle. I was so eager to start my business here and to take advantage of the beauty Colorado had to offer. I had big plans and I was thirsty for success, when I was unable to immediately pursue my dream it definitely took a toll.
Another obstacle I feel I constantly run into is never having enough time in the day. From curating content, editing, learning, marketing, and communicating with clients.. there’s always something to do and not enough time to get it all done.
With that being said, I will say the obstacles and challenges have only made me a better photographer and better small business owner. I’ll always appreciate the challenges I’ve encountered as they’ve only made me smarter, tougher, and more vigilant. As Roger Crawford said, “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Portrait Photography, I document love and nostalgia in every form. I’m known for having an authentic, earthy, and lighthearted approach to capturing families, couples, and individuals. I’m known for my ability to capture raw moments in people’s lives and tell a story through my photos.
I am most proud of the work I create and the relationships I’ve built with clients thus far. I believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to connect and relate to my clients. I’m able to make people feel comfortable, confident, and at ease while capturing their essence. I also believe my photography and editing style set me apart from others, embracing nature and utilizing that beauty along with the beauty of life and love.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If I could give anyone any advice on starting a small business or a photography business, it would be to just DO IT! Throw yourself into it, learn as much as you can, and just DO IT! As humans, we create so many obstacles in our heads. We have a tendency to worry and focus on what can go wrong when there’s so much that can go right. I also always preach to never be afraid to fail.. the only way to fail, is to be too afraid to try.
This quote inspired me in so many ways and I think it would be beneficial for anyone that’s trying to start a new venture. “Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up.
This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”―Terence McKenna
