Check Out Zach Scott’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Scott.

Hi Zach, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Prior to COVID, I traveled overseas training foreign police and special forces units through a Department of State program. During the lockdown, I tore my left bicep which resulted in me to having surgery and lengthy rehabilitation. My fiance Corinne suggested we get outdoors and start hiking. Once I was released from wearing my arm brace, she planned a surprise hike of the DeCaLiBron loop. We hit the summit of Mount Bross and started talking about what was out there to represent these amazing peaks. The idea of a challenge coin was brought up and seemed to make perfect sense with my military background and her work overseas in medical aid. A coin you could earn for all 58 peaks to commemorate your summits. Once we get off the mountain and reached cellphone coverage, we began our research. Five days later, Mountain Freedom was born, and we were scheduling a meeting with Crown Trophy out of Littleton, CO to make our idea a reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve learned very quickly that you will never have all the answers in any business. We have encountered a few speed bumps along the way such as supply chain and quality assurance issues, but for the most part it hasn’t been anything that we haven’t been able to navigate through or reach out for assistance. I’ve been fortunate to be involved in two veteran entrepreneur groups (Bunker Labs and Warrior Rising) which provide guidance for veterans to succeed in small business ownership.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 13 years veteran of the United States Coast Guard. During my time, I became a Squad Leader of the special ops unit of the Maritime Security Response Team where I served the last six years of my career conducting counter-terrorism operations. I feel my drive and adaptability is what has pushed me to be determined to succeed in running my own business and striving to keep moving forward.

How do you think about happiness?
Being outdoors is where I find my peace. Whether it be doing a small local hike, or waking up in the middle of the night to drive to a trailhead and be at 14,000′ feet by sunrise is where I find my Mountain Freedom.
