Community Highlights: Meet Alana Mascarenas of Scissors Studio

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Alana Mascarenas.

Alana Mascarenas

Hi Alana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Scissors Studio opened in 2022. It was a great opportunity that couldn’t be turned down. As a little girl, I have dreamed of owning my own salon, and every day, I am one step closer to that dream. Right now, I am located in an amazing suite located in Commerce City, Colorado.

Most people express they just work to pay bills. For me… I love what I do, and I love the bonds I have created with my clients over the last two and a half years. Most of all I love being able to use my knowledge in hair to help people better mange their hair, style for events and most of all confidence within themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road the whole way. As most jobs are never smooth, imagine balancing 2-3 part-time jobs/side hustles to afford rent. I opened Scissors Studio at 18 years old, and to say I was self-employed and I was the boss sounded amazing.

But deep down, it was hard because I wanted a steady income. My books weren’t always booked up, there were times where I was twiddling my thumbs to wait for a client to book and there were times where I was so happy because my salon was running itself.

As you know, we’re big fans of Scissors Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I mostly specialize in women’s hair. Although I love to cut men’s hair as well, doing women’s hair allows me to be more artistic and free. I love to do haircuts, and I love to see my client’s face smile after we do hair color. What sets me apart from others… is the fact I love to come to work.

Something I am most proud of is finally quitting my part-time job to be here at my business full-time now. I have seen my small business grow from a thought to running itself when it comes to booking appointments and regular loyal clientele.

Scissors Studio is a small business that opened in 2022, and at first, I was desperate to bring in clients. With that being said, I did nails, haircuts, and home appointments, as well as worked multiple jobs to advertise and hand out business cards. Once, I quickly realized I didn’t like to do nails for other people. I just offered haircuts for a year, and I noticed a change in my final results, and that’s when I started getting my regulars.

After about a year and a half, I opened up to do color appointments, and that’s when Scissors Studio started to get recognized by people in the neighborhood and when referrals started coming to me. It felt amazing that I decided to stick with my dream and not give up. If I did, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What do you think about happiness?
Something that makes me happy is my family all being together including the pets. I have always had a strong support system. During the rough times where I didn’t think I can continue with a business at a young age they were there to support me.

Family isn’t always blood, but it’s who chooses to be in your life and the ones who choose you to be in their life as well. They can have a great positive impact on all relationships in general. Having my family by my side and helping me better myself makes me happy and feel loved.
