Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Sullivan

Hi Ali, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating college, I decided to travel full-time, which completely transformed my life. Travel quickly became my passion, and I took on a variety of jobs overseas—from bartending to managing hostels, and most notably, teaching English. My simple goal for years was to support my travels while embracing the lifestyle I loved.

Then, when the pandemic hit, everything changed. I lost my teaching job, my apartment, and was forced to return to the U.S. It was a challenging time, but it also pushed me to create my own business. I realized that building something of my own meant I wouldn’t be dependent on external factors. I started as a “virtual assistant” and took on various tasks, but as time passed, I uncovered my passion for writing, SEO, and social media marketing, and realized how much I enjoyed helping others grow their brands.

Today, I work as a VA and content writer with a focus on the travel industry. My services include content creation, SEO, social media marketing, and project management. I work with travel agents, creators, wellness travel brands, and hostels, helping them share their stories, connect with their audiences, and grow their businesses with high-quality content and strategic marketing.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come—from losing everything to now running a thriving business. The freedom and creativity I’ve found in this journey reaffirm why I made this leap. For anyone considering working with me, I want them to know I’m passionate, dependable, and deeply committed to their success. Whether I’m crafting a blog post or managing a marketing project, I approach everything with the same level of dedication and care.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My background and education are in psychology and sociology, not business or marketing, so I’ve had to teach myself everything along the way—from building websites to creating contracts, and developing marketing strategies. There have been setbacks, difficult clients, and plenty of bumps along the way.

That said, I absolutely love every person or company I work with now. I’m very selective about who I take on as clients, because it’s important that we align with each other’s values and goals. While there have been challenges, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.

As you know, we’re big fans of Ali’s Happy Desk . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business, Ali’s Happy Desk, is dedicated to supporting others in the travel niche with personalized services designed to help them thrive. As a virtual assistant, I take on a variety of tasks—some that others might find tedious, like social media planning, scheduling, and updates, and others that are more creative and strategic, like content creation, writing, and project management.

Writing has become a major focus for me—it’s something I truly enjoy, and it quickly became one of my most in-demand services. My main offerings include travel writing, user-generated content (UGC) video creation, and SEO/marketing services. I primarily work with travel agents, creators, and hostels. The hostel industry, in particular, is close to my heart since I’ve worked at several during my travels, and I love staying connected to it however I can.

Recently, I’ve expanded my ventures to include Ali’s Happy Adventure, my personal travel blog where I share my experiences and insights from exploring the world, and Ali’s Happy Office, my Thatch travel store. Through the store, I sell custom travel itineraries and offer trip planning consultations, helping people create their dream trips.

What sets me apart is that I run everything myself. I’m very selective about the clients and projects I take on because it’s important to me that we share similar values and goals. This alignment allows me to create meaningful and impactful results.

What I’m most proud of is being able to help other small business owners and travelers chase their dreams, just like I’m chasing mine. Whether it’s crafting compelling content, optimizing their marketing strategies, or helping them plan unforgettable trips, I’m passionate about making a difference and helping others thrive in the travel space.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe luck plays a small role in everyone’s life, but it’s only part of the equation. Hard work, determination, believing in yourself, and maybe a touch of magic are just as important—if not more so. I think everyone has a purpose, and if you’re lucky, you’ll discover what that purpose is and have the chance to pursue it.

In many ways, I consider myself lucky or privileged. I’ve been able to create a business on my own terms, surrounded by a supportive network of friends and family who care about me. I’ve had my basic needs met, which is something not everyone can say, and that foundation has given me the stability to focus on building my dreams.

When it comes to my business, I think luck plays a small part—perhaps I was in the right place at the right time, or I met the right people along the way. But the real driving force has been my determination. My refusal to give up, even when things were hard, and my commitment to following my dreams despite what others might think, have been the most important factors in my journey.

Luck may open a door here and there, but you still have to walk through it—and that takes courage and effort. For me, those qualities have been the foundation of everything I’ve accomplished.
