Community Highlights: Meet Amanda Nielsen of Thot Leader Labs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Nielsen

Hi Amanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started on Twitter (now called X), where I built a community by sharing snarky, unfiltered takes on tech culture and corporate life. What began as a fun, informal outlet for my thoughts quickly gained traction. My tweets—often about the absurdities of startup culture and life as a Gen Z professional—frequently went viral, and people would comment, “You should put that on a t-shirt!” Eventually, I did—and people actually bought them.

That’s how Thot Leader Labs was born: an e-commerce brand selling apparel and accessories inspired by the humor, chaos, and relatability of working in the tech industry. It’s a way for professionals to express themselves in a cheeky, irreverent way—think snarky quips on shirts and totes that capture the shared experience of burnout, beanbag chairs, and startup woes.

But Thot Leader Labs is only part of my story. My day job is in strategic partnerships for a SaaS company, and I’ve spent nearly my entire career in this space after pivoting from marketing early on. In addition, I’m a freelance consultant, speaker, and career mentor for professionals transitioning into partnerships roles. Through my mentorship program, I help others navigate their pivot, grow their careers, and build strong, impactful partnerships.

At its core, my story is about turning humor and authenticity into a brand while balancing a fulfilling corporate career. Whether it’s making people laugh with a t-shirt or coaching them into their next role, I love creating connection and value—whether through snark or strategy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth for me. I started out at one of those companies embodying peak hustle culture—you know, bean bags in the office, beer on tap, the “we’re a family” and “work hard, play hard” kind of vibe. It was a trial by fire and incredibly formative for my early career. Being a young woman in a male-dominated space came with its own set of challenges, from having to prove myself repeatedly to navigating microaggressions and occasional sexism.

This experience is reflected in the name of my company, Thot Leader Labs. The name is deeply personal and inspired by a moment in my first job out of college when a sexist slur was used against me in a professional setting. While it was an upsetting experience, it also became a turning point. Reclaiming that word and using it as a statement of empowerment allowed me to challenge traditional ideas of what a “thought leader” looks like. You don’t have to be a middle-aged man in a Patagonia vest to have credibility or make an impact in this industry.

Throughout my career, I’ve also dealt with impostor syndrome. Coming from a background where my parents didn’t work in white-collar jobs, I didn’t have a built-in network or clear guidance to rely on. It often felt like I was figuring things out on my own while questioning whether I truly belonged in this space.

These challenges, while difficult, have been pivotal in shaping my career, perspective, and drive. They taught me resilience, the value of owning my story, and the importance of creating space for myself and others who don’t fit the conventional mold in professional environments.

As you know, we’re big fans of Thot Leader Labs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Thot Leader Labs is a bold, unapologetic brand that offers a fresh take on tech industry culture with a Gen Z spin. Known for its sarcastic, edgy humor, Thot Leader Labs has earned a following for being unfiltered and relatable, providing apparel and accessories that resonate with professionals navigating the tech and startup world. Our merchandise solves a unique niche by allowing people to wear their career journey proudly—especially in an industry where our jobs are such a huge part of our identities. While corporate humor and finance memes are common, Thot Leader Labs stands apart by specifically catering to the quirks and challenges of tech and startup culture with a distinct, modern voice.

Beyond the merchandise, I offer something that’s both emerging and highly valuable: career mentorship for professionals looking to pivot into the Partnerships space. Partnerships is a relatively new field compared to traditional roles like marketing and sales, but its demand is growing rapidly as more companies develop partner programs. Partnerships professionals are in high demand because the role blends the best aspects of marketing, sales, business development, and solution engineering. It’s a dynamic, flexible, well-paid field that’s only going to become more popular as companies continue to recognize its value.

As the demand for partnerships talent grows, many people are unsure how to make the switch into this field. I solve this by offering one-on-one mentorship and personalized coaching to guide professionals through the pivot into partnerships. I help them navigate this exciting career path, tapping into their skills while opening doors to a fulfilling, community-driven profession.

At the core of my brand, I’m proud of the space I’ve created for people who want to express their authentic selves while navigating the modern professional world. Whether it’s through the merchandise or career coaching, Thot Leader Labs offers something distinct—something that isn’t afraid to be bold, real, and a little bit cheeky, but always with purpose.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a little quirky but definitely charming. I’ve always been into sports and physical activities—riding bikes, snowmobiles, and spending a lot of time outdoors with my dad. Some of my best memories are those days, and today, I’m still an avid mountain biker. I played softball for many years, with my dad coaching my teams, which made it all the more fun. I stayed active throughout childhood, also doing Taekwondo, running track, and playing soccer. I loved being outdoors in my small Vermont hometown, and it shaped a lot of who I am today.

Aside from sports, I was always a strong reader and writer, and I think that’s really helped me get to where I am now—especially when it comes to writing tweets and content. I was also very creative—constantly sewing and making clothes for my stuffed animals, putting on plays with them, and even building houses for them out of random household objects. I was always drawing or working on art projects. Those creative outlets shaped my approach to problem-solving and content creation, and I still rely on that creativity every day.

But perhaps my most notable obsession growing up was dogs (and I still have it). I used to tell people I was part dog, and it wasn’t just a random phase—I thought I literally had dog DNA. Everything I did involved dogs—every drawing, every short story, a massive Scooby-Doo mural in my room. All my stuffed animals were dogs, and I even read dog encyclopedias for fun. It’s safe to say that passion stuck with me, and I still retain a ton of obscure dog knowledge. While dogs are my number one, I’ve always had a soft spot for other animals too—manatees, horses, rodents—you name it.

I loved to play, crack jokes, and always found myself at the center of the action, making people laugh along the way. I was always socializing, probably a little too much at times, and naturally built a strong circle of friends. That ability to connect with people has served me well in building relationships and growing my career, especially in Partnerships.

I’ve always been very close with my family, particularly my grandparents. I spent a lot of time with them on their property, helping my grandmother in her garden, visiting farmers markets, and eating organic long before it was trendy. She was a huge influence on me. Not only was she an accomplished RN, but she also traveled the world long before the internet made it all so accessible. The way she managed to book international trips back then still blows my mind!

All these experiences—whether it was growing up with a passion for sports, my love for dogs, or the strong connections I’ve built with my family—shaped who I am today. They taught me the importance of staying active, being curious, and always pushing boundaries. My childhood in Vermont and the values instilled in me by my family laid the foundation for my drive, my creativity, and my ability to build community. These roots have shaped how I approach both life and business—guided by authenticity, resilience, and a distinct blend of creativity and drive.
