Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy King.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my solo practice in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, social issues were at the forefront of public conversation, and one of the most personal to me was the Stop Asian Hate movement and the growing awareness of Asian American mental health. More and more Asian individuals were reaching out—children of immigrants, transracial adoptees, and multiracial individuals—seeking support for experiences unique to the Asian American journey.
This work was deeply personal for me. I am a second-generation Asian American, born to refugee parents, and among the first in my family to attend college—let alone earn a doctorate. In my journey to become a psychologist, I sought out all kinds of training experiences because I’ve always been fascinated by the complexity of people. I wanted to understand what shapes us—our personalities, our resilience, and how we adapt to pain and change. I became especially interested in how personality develops, how trauma can shift someone’s sense of self, and how chronic conditions like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia affect the way people experience the world. Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the layers and contradictions that make each person who they are.
Then the pandemic hit, and more Asian clients began seeking therapy to address struggles I also knew intimately—identity and belonging, internalized and systemic racism, and the challenge of bridging cultural and generational gaps in families where “parents just don’t get it.” I found myself drawn to this work because it allowed me to integrate everything I’d learned about human psychology with real cultural complexity. It pushed me beyond the surface-level “cultural competency” training I’d received in graduate school and into truly holistic, culturally informed practice.
At the time, there were very few Asian therapists with both a deep clinical foundation and expertise in culturally integrated therapy. Over the past few years, I’ve grown into something of an expert in this area—offering trainings to non-Asian therapists on how to better support AAPI clients, and leading workshops within the AAPI community on mental health and identity. My practice has since expanded to include other Asian therapists who share this passion for integrating psychological expertise with lived experience. Today, over half of our clients are Asian-identifying individuals or those who value culturally attuned therapy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Early in the practice, there was a burst in mental health need because of the pandemic. Nearly all therapists I knew were overwhelmed with clients. In the last couple years, it has become harder to stand out as a specialty practice because of tech-backed mental health companies and alternatives like “AI therapy” (aka talking to AI agents about your mental health concerns). For someone looking for a therapist, I get that the options can feel overwhelming.
It’s important to know that research consistently shows the quality of your relationship with your therapist is the strongest predictor of successful therapy. You want to feel that your therapist gets you—your background, your experiences, and what matters most to you. You should feel seen for all of who you are and confident they can help you reach your goals. Therapy can feel like a big investment, but when it’s the right fit, the benefits tend to show up faster and last longer. There are many options out there for improving your mental health, and finding a great therapist can feel daunting, but your mental health is worth the investment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
InnerWoven Therapy is a group of therapists with diverse life experiences, united by one core value: a deep commitment to integrating cultural sensitivity into every aspect of our work. We believe that each client’s unique background and identity are essential parts of their story, and that true healing happens when their struggles are understood within that context.
Our team specializes in trauma, depression, anxiety, parenting, perinatal mental health, military and veteran mental health, and grief and loss. In every session, we bring compassion, psychological expertise, and cultural humility.
We’re proud to be among the first therapy practices in Colorado to center this approach. In the mountain region and Midwest, few therapists specialize in AAPI mental health—let alone an entire group united by this passion. Over half of our clients identify as Asian. While we are clinically trained to treat the conditions above, we also work deeply with intergenerational trauma, intercultural dynamics within families, language barriers, and cultural identity conflicts. We believe that meaningful, lasting therapy happens when you have therapists who truly get it.
As bicultural therapists, we are both inside and outside of any given culture—able to see situations from multiple angles. And culture, of course, isn’t just about race. It also shows up in regional differences, family systems, and the subtle ways people move through the world. Even for clients who aren’t seeking a specifically cultural focus, this lens allows us to understand complexity from many perspectives—and to meet each client exactly where they are.
Any big plans?
The plan is to keep growing deep roots in the mental health community—both within and beyond the AAPI community. We’ll continue providing high-quality care to our clients, offering workshops for the public, and training other therapists in culturally informed practice. We’re always eager to share our vision and passion, and to be recognized not just for our work with AAPI clients, but for what we bring to the broader community: skilled, compassionate, and culturally attuned therapy. In short, my hope is to keep growing—and to keep highlighting the incredible team of clinicians I have beside me, because they truly are worth every penny.
