Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobbie Mooney.
Hi Bobbie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the rolling hills of northern Vermont, where a deep connection to nature and community shaped my lifelong commitment to service. And after going to college and law school on the west coast, I ended up here in the middled in Colorado, about 15 years ago. I’ve spent most of my career in Colorado nonprofits and governments, at the intersection of law, community wellbeing, and care for the more‑than‑human world.
I started my legal career in environmental advocacy — I’ve wanted to “save the planet” since I was a little girl. I studied environmental science as an undergrad and then went to law school to equip myself and my communities with the tools to protect the people, places, and planet we love. I’ve had the privilege to be a part of fighting many a ‘good fight’ protecting forests, clean air, clean water, and climate policy. And, I have also faced my own deep deep grief and despair about the state of our world. Climate change and ecological destructions are always on my mind. In 2023, I became a Good Grief facilitator, trained to lead groups through their own heavy emotions about our climate and ecological crises. That work equipped me with tools, resources, and a community brave enough to feel all the big feels and re-engage in meaningful action. It was a big shift in how I think and feel and act in response to the big challenges we face.
Then, starting a few years ago, two losses in my family made the important topic of estate planning painfully real for me. First, my brother’s mother-in-law passed after a battle with cancer. And she had a will, but it didn’t keep her family out of conflict or out of court — disorganized assets, conflicting versions of the wills, and lack of communication ahead of time led to a costly legal battle and sibling relationships destroyed. My sister-in-law still can’t speak to one of her sisters. Next, when my aunt had a major stroke and passed away two weeks later, she had no legal planning at all. No will, no power of attorney, nothing. My family was left scrambling across international borders during a time of sudden grief. These experiences showed me how essential it is to have an estate plan that’s thorough, up to date, and understood by the people who will need to use it. I realized there was a tremendous opportunity to be practically helpful to families and save them the costs, stress, and conflict experienced by my family. I discovered estate planning as a new way I could make a meaningful contribution to our world.
Estate planning may seem like a different path after a career in government and nonprofits, but to me, it’s deeply connected. It’s another way of tending to what we love — our families, our communities, and the living world that sustains us. I founded Small Planet Law in 2025 to serve Coloradans with holistic, modern, relationship-based estate planning that aligns with our values and actually works — to keep families out of court and out of conflict. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Switching mid-career from the public service sector to entrepreneurship is quite an adventure! Launching a small business comes with an endless supply of problems to solve, options to evaluate, and decisions to make. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the things on the to-do list. The hardest part has been finding balance between bring online the tools and infrastructure Small Planet Law needs to deliver excellence to our clients while keeping overhead costs low enough to keep our services accessible. There are so many powerful tech tools out there for the work that we do, but at this stage we have to pick and choose carefully. We’ve made some mistakes already with systems that didn’t serve us and our client, but we keep moving forward to new solutions because we’re not afraid to iterate and change things up when needed. And that includes the systems for keeping our team health and happy. One brilliant mentor shared that nervous system regulation is essential to business success. That insight has helped us re-center our focus more than once!
