Community Highlights: Meet Brian Hunter of The Mousetrap Recording Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Hunter

Hi Brian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My whole life, I’ve been interested in music recording. I attended CU-Denver and got a bachelor of science degree in music technology. Shortly after graduating, I became the engineer for Swallow Hill Music Association. I’ve been running live sound for the concerts and helped run their recording studio. I opened The Mousetrap Recording studio in 2003 near the I-25 and I-70 (Mousetrap) highway interchange. In 2024, I teamed up with Will Schmid to build a new, state of the art recording facility. The Mousetrap relocated in July and has been going strong since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always challenges working in the music business. Though I’ve made my living since college with music, the first seven years were quite hard. I went into debt but stuck it out. The love for the work and support of my wife got me through.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Mousetrap is a studio focused primarily on music recording. One of my favorite parts of the job is the opportunity to work with all different genres of music. The new facility features the best gear we could get our hands on. The rooms were designed with good acoustics in mind and the goal of keeping things creative and comfortable. I thought my whole career that I’d been recording in good quality acoustic spaces. It wasn’t until the first session in July that I realized what a truly good room sounds like. Every day I get to work there seems like a blessing.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I pay attention to sound quality the whole way through the recording, mixing and mastering process. Every detail, no matter how small, contributes at the end to making recordings that people will want to listen to.
