Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlotte Jones.
Charlotte, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Following an internship in cooperate sponsorship for the Avalanche and Nuggets, I was the first employee of the Altitude Sports & Entertainment regional sports network. Over about eight years, I learned about the television industry and content distribution. I then moved to NYC for a few years and expanded on this knowledge in a domestic distribution marketing role at HBO. As Colorado native with much of my family in Colorado, and a love of camping, hiking, etc. I returned home to Denver, ultimately finding an opportunity to do exactly what I wanted–competitive research and marketing strategy consulting at a small Denver-based company. After a few years there, I struck out on my own and formed my own company, Vérité Strategies, LLC.
Vérité Strategies provides clients with strategic insights to better compete in their industries, and develop workflows, and leverage technology to maximize the utility of these insights. This includes the aggregation and analysis of key variables of differentiation of various products–from content and product features to pricing, positioning to targeting, and more–using a combination of secondary and primary research. The word Vérité in Vérité Strategies refers to the term Cinema Vérité– which means “truth cinema” in French, which is reality-based filmmaking style that leverages authenticity, truth, and realism. In addition to the connection to the video content business I have worked in, Vérité Strategies leverages a realistic, data-driven approach through development of marketing strategy programs that are realistic for a company or departments’ resources. I design, set up, and implement these programs, train individuals/teams to manage them, and in some cases continue to be a resource on an ongoing basis.
As a consultant, I have worked with many of the largest television distributors and major television network groups, in particular, with an expertise in the digital disruption and transition from traditional television distribution to online streaming. I have also worked with small and medium size businesses in a variety of capacities: creating business and marketing plans, developing marketing operations programs to monitor and analyze the competitive environment, marketing operations execution, quantitative and qualitative market research and analysis, and helping select and set up software to manage these programs.
Along with my work at Vérité Strategies, I have served on the Board of Directors for the Media+Tech Collective (aka MTC, formerly the Rocky Mountain Cable Association, or RMCA) for about five years, including serving as President and guiding the organization through the rebranding from RMCA to MTC, which included launching a new membership and event management system and updating formalizing accounting and operations SOPs. I also teach undergraduate and graduate marketing course at the University of Colorado Denver and help support the marketing and sports and entertainment management programs there.
My latest project is a non-profit project I recently launched with my husband, Nick, called No Limits Endeavors. Launching in 2022, the No Limits Endeavors website will be an online resource to help individuals with physical disabilities and other challenges to pursue the recreational and vocational pursuits, to share stories and inspire others, and to ask for help. There are many organizations out there to help people that might be in this type of situation, but they aren’t always the best at marketing and awareness and it is sometimes so discouraging to find the path for that pursuit to the degree that people believe it’s just not even possible. An example of this is a paraplegic individual that would like to get their private pilot’s license to fly an airplane. The technology exists, there are individuals with disabilities that have gotten their pilot’s license (in many cases at the same cost as it is for a fully able-bodied person), but it’s not an easy path to figure out or navigate–and there’s no reason for that. The No Limits Endeavors aviation team will create awareness, offer discovery flights, and strives to clarify and simplify the path to becoming a pilot for those that can pass the FAA medical requirements. While No Limits Endeavors will create programs and paths for some recreational and vocational pursuits itself, it will also support organizations across the country through the website, social platforms, and marketing programs to connect those that help the people with those that want the help, or never realized what was possible.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a smooth road more recently, but it’s been a bumpy ride to get here. While my grandfather helped me a little bit towards my undergrad degree, I paid for most of it on my own while working and going to school full time. It was suggested by other family members at one point that I go to college for a year to find a husband (despite only getting one B in high school), but I imagined so much more than only being someone’s wife. I was told that trying to have a career in professional sports was unrealistic, but I did it anyway. I was told trying to have a career in television was unrealistic, but I did it anyway. I was told that moving to NYC was unrealistic, but I did it anyway. I was told starting my own business was unrealistic, but I did it anyway. Some of the industries I’ve worked in have been historically male-dominated, so there have been challenges with that as well as having run into the glass ceiling in the past. While it was a roller coaster at times, I knew that hard work and perseverance were key, as was making the best of each situation I encountered.
